The year 2004: Due to unfortunate circumstances we lived -for 1 year- in a derilict farm, mice tried to steal our food, moth our clothes and we were not sure that the floorboards could hold our weight. Our grandson caught a virus and his little body did not produce red bloodcells for a while. My husbands father died.
Then we got a letter from a lottery (BankGiroLoterij):
"congratulations you did win a city trip to a city of your choice"... We had to read this letter 3 times to fully understand the meaning.
Only a few months to go before the Olympics, so we decided to go to Athens (with 200 euro's pocket money - more then enough for food and drinks).
Needless to say that we had a grand time over there.
When we arrived it just had rained for a few days so there was no smog, temperatures were good and people very very friendly. What we did see was that Athens was nowhere near ready for the Olympics (everything worked out well in the end).
The first evening we asked a cabdriver to take us to the amphitheatre on the Lykavittós Hill. He did not know where to go but I had done my homework so I could tell him. From there we climbed a few thousand steps (don't know how many) to the top of the Hill, all the while enjoying the views.
There is a little chapel and a cafe and afterwards we returned to Kolonáki with the funicular.
In this picture you can look all the way to Pireus (Piraeus) and just above the middle you can see the old Olympic Stadion.
This picture was taken with the Minolta Dimage 5, which was stolen (with pictures) by some children when we returned from Trinidad and Tobago on Schiphol Airport Amsterdam. |

Wow Els
An amazing clear picture of Athens.
Mind you, we have been there too, although that was in 1980...
The city was already covered in smog then...
I love the way you show us the complexity of Athens... and then there is the oasis... the Stadium! GREAT one Els!
Cheers,
Anneke

Gr Jos

Hello Els, it is very rare to see a clear image of Athens these days and presented in this way adds to the overall impression.
Interesting note as well.
