Longing for a Greek summer

The weather in Holland is terrible. Yesterday long delays on many European airports due thunderstorms, so on Schiphol. I had the plan to go tomorrow to the Royal Dutch Airforce airshow on Volkel airforce base, but if it stays this weather I’m not sure….

So to cheer my self up, a sunny picture.

An oldie from my digital shoebox; a picture taken last summer in the Greek Peloponnesus. While I was driving through this beautiful countryside, going uphill and downhill a saw this panorama of the little city of Areopoli in the province of Laconia. [The word "laconic" is derived from the name of the region by analogy - to speak in a concise way, as the Spartans were reputed by the Athenians to do.Text: Wikipedia.com]

The contrasting colours of sea and land are striking. The white buildings in the distance are typical Greeek.

Boy....I’m really longing for a Greek summer!

Took this picture with my good old Minolta Z1 camera.

PP-talk: Adjusted brightness and contrast, increased slightly the saturation, used noise filter (Neat Image), cropped and add frame.

Laconia
Laconia (Λακωνία; see also List of traditional Greek place names), also known as Lacedeamonia, is a prefecture in Greece. In ancient Greece it was the principal region of the Spartan state. Throughout classical antiquity the Spartan sphere of influence expanded Messenia, whose inhabitants (the helots) were permanently enslaved. In medieval times it was part of the Byzantine Empire and following the Crusades it was the home of the Byzantine Despotate of Morea, held by the penultimate Greek ruling dynasty, the Palaiologoi. In modern times, Laconia has the legal status of a prefecture, with Sparta its administrative capital. Its main towns and cities are Amyclae, Areopolis, Gytheion, Molaoi, Monemvasia, Mystras, Neapoli and Sellasia. It encompasses Cape Malea and Cape Tainaron and a large part of the Mani Peninsula.
The Evrotas is the longest river in the prefecture. The valley of the Evrotas is predominantly an agricultural region that contains many citrus groves, olive groves and pasture lands and most of all, oranges. It is the location of the largest orange production in the Peloponnese and probably all of Greece. The brand of orange juice named after this prefecture Lakonia is based in Amyclae and sells fresh orange juice entirely from this region.
Taygetus (2,407 m), known as Pentadaktylos (five-fingers) throughout the middle ages, is west of Sparta and the Evrotas valley. It is the highest mountain in Laconia and the Peloponnese, and mostly covered with pine trees. Two roads connect the adjoining prefectures of Messinia and Laconia: one is a tortuous mountain pass through Taygetus and the other bypasses the mountain via the Mani district to the south. The other major mountain is Parnon (1,961 m) to the east.
A stalactite cave in the southwest of the prefecture is located south of Areopolis. This famous cave is called Dirou and is a major tourist attraction.

It is bounded by the Taygetus mountains to the west with Messenia, Arcadia to the north and with the Parnon mountains to the northeast, the Myrtoan Sea to the east and the Gulf of Laconia and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. The islands of Cythera and Antikythera lie to the south, but they administratively belong to the prefecture of Piraeus.

Hi Hans:
What I like here is the outline created by the waters, and your diognal composition here.
Super post!!!

Good morning Hans

Great capture, I know the feeling, I took the day off work yesterday and it just rained all day, not to be downhearted I spent the time in between chores photographing rain drops. Anyway enough of that. This image is lovely. I like the way the light moves from darkened areas at the bottom to light bright sunny skies at the top.. like looking forward and out towards sunny times... which of course we all are :-)

Great shot TFS regards Helen

Hello Hans.

Humm Amazing POV. I Am stuck on your photograph. Very Very Nice. Thank you for Sharing this beautiful Shot! Kinds regards,
Josée

Beautiful view of this wonderful scenery.
Good sharpness and details
Well seen
Pierre

Hey Big Fella!

The BLUE here really smacks you in the face when you open the thumbnail! I think there are a couple of minor issues with exposure and lack of sharpness, but the BLUE contrasting with the white and green compensates enough for me! And I love the wee stretch of road snaking down the left - it breaks up the scene very nicely and adds interest.

Good shot!

We too are having storms and flooding every afternoon, with bolts of lightening! Last night was one of the worst! Have we made the gods angry with our pics??? I hope you get your Greek summer.....!!

Hello Hans:)
Breathtaking photo, splendid view, just WOW.
I love it:) and I'm missing Greece, such a beautiful country:)
Best wishes - Tom

Hello Hans,
Storms here also and still this evening, May which wasn't good and June either. It's certain which one dreams of pretty landscape like that which you us present.
The road seems flies away towards the sky of a blue so major that it seems unreal. Spot greenery against the vastness of the sea
Very good notes as always.
Good week-end all the same.
Kisses de ton amie,
Corinne

Duizelingwekkend; wat een zicht; ik zal er nooit komen; heb vakanties als die afgezworen. Maar als ik dit zie; wat een ruimte en frisheid.
Mooi hoor.

Hello Hans,
An attractive seaside image!
Well composed with this strong diagonal, the rugged coastline with the small villages is an attractive motif...
And then there is the wonderful blue sea!
Greetings,
