"Speed, give me what I need..." (Billy Idol)

Everytime I take a look on this shot it makes me wanna skate... I feel the adrenaline rush in my veins...
After posting some landscapes the time has come for some serious action :)
This is my friend practicing a Frontside IndyGrab! It's pretty frightening flying about 4.5m high but he has landed safely!

Technique: I was experimenting how to show speed and motion so I've set my gear to a longer shutter speed and tried to follow his move with the camera! I'm quite satisfied with the result though I cut his fingers :))
Unfortunately his deck has a reflective silver paint so the flash made it overexposed at the tail!

I hope you still like it this way!!? :)

PP: Just played around with saturation and contrast balance!

Great sense of movement in your action shot here Tom. I think a good experiment that worked very well. Good capture!
Good choice of music too I've been a fan of Billy Idol sinse I was a teenager and still am now.

John

hi good moments and nice dynamic regards

nice taste of Speed he got there! If you have all that stamina plus speed! that's a passport to heaven! tfS!

WAS it THAT HIGH ToMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm? GOD!!! U know what, I tried to learn skating when I was in hmmmmmmm.... 6th class but never could balance... Nope... Not my sport... :D... this is a good experiment and yes!!! It came out well for the first time... :D... Am happy for U!!! :D... TFS.. :D

Hugggggggggggggssssssssssssss,
Hima. :D

Very nice action shot, ToM, with good results from the panning technique. I actually like the overexposed tip of the board because it gives more of a sense of speed (IMO). I find the background a tad distracting but it is a minor detail in the action & tension we can feel for the skateboarder. Well done!

wow!! you are a master of action shots, Tom!!awesome!! I just love the dynamic here, and hooray for Billy Idol ;D
M:)

glad to read he landed safely ;o)
i like a lot his expression and the sense of movement you managed to capture :o)
i just wonder if you could somehow PP the background as the green is a bit disturbing :o)
anyway ... you are the expert and the artist ;o)

The movement is very impressive! Seem to be high! I enjoy the look of the skate. The ramp have a good decorum too!

My boys were always covered in scars from their skate boarding days. I got sick of bandaging and cleaning them up. Even my husband (who thought he was becoming a champ) broke his front teeth, noise and wrist!
But I can understand what you feel looking at this super action shot ToM. Great result, well done.
Janice

Excellent action shot and considering the difficult conditions you did a great job! Well done, I always like this type of shot!
Vassilis

Man I love that lens! :D Great shot. Good composition and the flash with longer shutter speed makes for a nice motion blur with some sharp parts. I think if this was dusk and you were on the side of the half pipe that was facing the sunset it would look even cooler! just an idea though. Great job! JP

Great action shot Tom, and the camera panning (which is a tough trick) is very well done here. Expression is clear along with the grip of the deck - well captured and nicely done ...
Sam

oh the result was very good indeed!!! when I saw this picture I thought you had photoshoped it in order to give home motion.. but you did it without photoshop, congratulations hehehe

Yay! heheh.. Skate pics are back! wohooo!

I think the cam technique is cool.

Take care of your cam and yourself or else............. :p

Good fish eye usage and especialy the flash.

Cool effect.

Hi ToM,

Excellent action shot!

Well done!
Constantinos

Wow, Tom ! What a great action shot ! Beautifully done. I might have cropped it a bit closer, but that's just me.

Love it. What did your friend think of this ?

Marleen

great experiment, ToM!:) I love the moving here... I see this picture also as a bw... maybe I'll try a ws if you don't mind...

love the action and movement here Tom :)
very nice work

Its good that you were allowed to use the flash, because in the actual events restrictions is imposed. Still mastery of fill flash and subjects movement requires patience and you have succeeded the very essence of the action. Congratulations - JEFFREY
