Europe's largest national pantheon was established in 1847 as a repository for great men of the nation: Batthyány, Deák, Kossuth, Vörösmarty to name but a few. In the fifties the cemetery was declared closed and reserved for the ceremonial burial of left-wing politicians. József Antal, prime minister of the first democratically elected government after the fall of communism, was also interred here. In addition to politicians and such like celebrities there are the graves of famous Hungarian writers, painters and other artists. The cemetery also features a unique institution in Europe, the Museum of Funeral Culture. |
