[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here's another shot from our Saturday's skating session. I love this one, especially because of his shadow!! It's like the Genie coming out not from the magic lamp but from the skateboard :)

This trick is called Rock'n'Roll...here's a short lesson! :)
1. Approach the transition with enough speed to get up to the coping.
2. When you get up there, get your front truck over the coping and put pressure on your nose so you "rock" on the coping on the middle of your board. (shown on the photo) :)
3. Now here's the tough part. Get your weight back onto the tail and perform a kick turn, making sure that your front truck is high enough to clear the coping as you swing it around.
4. Once you've got that covered, just touch your front wheels back onto the transition and cruise on down to the flats.

It's easy ha?? :))

I posted another crop to workshop(B&W).

Hello Tom,

Good instant capture, I like the position of the skater and the shadow.
I prefer this one to the workshop.
Bravo!

Marc.

beautiful shot Tom
good colors and details, you are rite about the shadow :) its very cool

I liked that detailed explanation... You make it sound so easy ;-)
As for the photo, I think this is another great capture and you are right, the shadow really makes the image stronger. About the one in the workshop, I have to tell you that i really like that one, though the feeling I get from it is entirely different; if in this one we really get a feeling of the movement of the skater in the half pipe, in the b&w one, because of the crop it looks like he is about to fall down... I like that strange "Oh my God he's gonna fall" feeling I get from the workshop photo ;-)
So, each one is interesting in its own way.
Szia!!

Ana

Hi Tom it's a beautiful contrast, the shadow is excellent but you would not catch me doing something of the sort, you would have a pack of bones to photograph, jokes apart it's a good thing for youngsters as long as they are carefull!!! in italian we say 'VIVE LA GIOVENTU" .. Long live youth.
Ciao Ros

Hi Tom!
First of all, thanx for explaining the technique...I will try it in my next wild skateboarding session :/
the picture is great! now, the 2 versions:
agree with the others that more cropping would not do good; why not B&W in this version? I think the shadow would stand out even more. Or, the background could be desaturated, keeping the skater in colur?
Anyway, you did a great job, Tom:)
TFS!
regards,
M.

Nice composition. The shadow definately works, leading the eye to the focal point at the skateboard. If this was my photo, I might be tempted to clone out the blurred building in the background.

Great shot,Tom! I love that kind of photos! I took quite a few in the past here in Montreal.Yours is very interesting with the shadow. But I prefer the black and white instead of the colors.Very well done! Congrats! Michel

Very good action shot, ToM. You caught him at the right moment in his motion and we know what he is doing because of your detailed explaination (I am way too scared to even try it!!!). I will be a bit nit-picky but I find it too bad that you cut the head and the arms of the guy in the shadow; it would have been great to have the perfect shadow but with action shot it is often difficult to do a perfect composition as things are moving so fast. Well done!

I liked his shade ^_^
What does it mean "gorzenal"??

Great action shot, perfect timing. Excellent composition and well balanced lighting.

Great Shot Tom!
"Big Freeze" in action!
Composition & Shadow.... Excellence!

Wong

Hi Tom,
Super action shot! the way you "froze" the skater is brilliant. I agree with you that the shadow gives a huge effect, but I also like the B&W version. In any event, you've got a winner here, so:
TFS,

Shelly:))
