[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hi there! :) Again, this is a result of an experiment. I've tried out different settings to learn more about my camera. So I made some test shots in my dark room. I had no intention to keep them (not even posting them) but I've just found interesting how my necklace was exposed by the light of my monitor! Since it was a hand held shot it's a bit blurry but kept them as the only shot of this serie which hadn't been deleted! :) So here it is :)
I'd like to thank again to Ana Carloto aka. "alagoa" for the encouraging words!! :)

PP: I used gradient map with red colour on this one! :)


Hei Matau: It's a bone carving in the shape of a stylized fish hook. The fish-hook shape of the hei matau finds its origins in Maori legend, which holds that the North Island of New Zealand was once a huge fish that was caught by the great mariner Maui using only a woven line and a bone hook. Legend holds that the shape of Hawke Bay is that of the hei matau, which caught in the fish's side.
For the Maori, the hei matau represents not only their land, but also prosperity, fertility and safe passage over water.

You have an interesting experimental photo here. I think it is instructive - the lighting, the partial face and seperation from the pendant.

Lovely to see this bone carving from New Zealand... and you of course Tom... Excellent photo, love the effect you have captured with the lighting..

Really creative work Tom, the whole idea and the realization is great. The result is a very artistic image with moody lighting and nice choice of red color. Even the slight blur makes it more interesting.

nice experiment, I really like the out of nowhere necklace :o)
as to the reddish gradient map ... personally I prefer your usual orange one for its softer and warmer results :o) however this one adds a devil's touch on the look. It's original and different, excellent for a nice Halloween shot ;op

Nice to meet you Tom, I like very much the angle and the red tone is a "plus" for me.

Seems like you still miss New Zealand a lot, I don't blame you at all!
Great moody self-portrait, Tom! I like the tilted head, and of course the intense look in your eyes. Maybe the white part of the eyeball could be a little less red, but then again it might be in too big a contrast with the face, I don't know...anyhow, always great to see you!! I agree that the visible pendant of yours, which has an interesting history behind it's name, is absolutly a catchy detail!

Different and interesting portrait Tom, and it is damn good too. A successful experiment. The note is really interesting and your necklace is clearly visiblw in the shot. Nicely done.

Hi ToM,
Nice experimenting. Aside from the blur, this looks pretty good. I like the soft lighting and how you emerge from the darkness ever so. From the red color, I thought you meant a real film darkroom...but I see it's pp...and the remark about a monitor didn't make sense to me. But eventually, I figured it out. Overall, that's a pretty good note.
Anyhow...keep playing...you're getting good results.

You may laugh ToM, but I find your portrait somehow in style with ever famous still shot from the movie "Ivan The Terrible" by Sergey Eisenstein. And if you convert your photo to B&W...wow...what a similarity.
The diagonal position of the face, characteristic shape, the eyes, small goaty...Bingo.
