[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a view ( a partial view of a larger geothermal area named Krafla -this is the caldera of an active volcano )from the Leirhnjukur rim path . Rather than a cone-shaped peak Krafla is a largely level system of north-south trending fissure underlaid by a great magma chamber, at present the ground is rising indicating possible future activity , the Nordic Volcanological Center monitors and keeps tracks of the most recent developments As is the case here hiking is always dangerous , the earth's crust is thin and the ground is ferociously hot so hikers are well advised not to stray from the marked path at any time !
1/80, ISO 100, F/5 applied extra contrast to bring out more details ,USM , a small frame ,

A dramatic and exciting landscape, the rising steam is great! Very good placement of the hikers aross the lower quarter of the frame.

Nice landscape shot.. The figures give a good sense of scale and stand out nicely against the barren rock..

If anything I'd crop a fraction off the top - as there's a hint of horizon in the distance and brings an 'end' (boundary) to the scene if you know what I mean. Nice to imagine that this landscape goes on and on..

Hi Carol,
Another typical Icelandic view - an active volcano. Well captured moment as the walking people show contrast to the black lava. Great sharpness and representation of smoke. Like it was taken on the Moon. :) Fantastic image! Keep it up!

An amazing scene. Great composition, although I agree with whiteknight about cropping the top of. The walkers red really stands out. well done.

IMO " almost " Carol : you should have waited till they went up and you should, in the mean time, went down.
For me it's a shame that those people are on the photo :
what a landscape !! Rough, smoking, ...
I'm seeking by going down a wider view, depth.

In short :
Now you have people in bright red jackets in front of a smoking background.
Do you get my ... " regret " :-)

Oh well, I can filter them out

Hello Carol.
I like the sense of scale that you have brought to the picture by including the people. The bright jackets just happen to add.
Positioning them in the corner is a good idea here. Thanks for posting. Karin

PS. May I ask you if you have any photographic advice for me when I go to Iceland this coming August. I will bring a tripod and some neutral density filters and of course a warming polarizer. What are your thoughts?? Would you do anything differently?
