| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
On a recent visit to Donegal,Eire my wife and I decided to visit the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland.
This most spectacular and unusual place is one that I have wanted to visit for many years. We were not disappointed.
The Fable
The legend has it that the Irish giant (Finn McCool) built the causeway to walk from N.Ireland across to Scotland to fight the Scottish giant Benandonner.
When he didn't arrive the much larger Benandonner crossed the causeway to seek him out.
McCool's wife, in order to protect him, covered McCool in a blanket and pretended he was their baby son. When Benandonner saw the size of the 'infant' he assuming that McCool must be gigantic indeed.
He fled back to Scotland, ripping up the causeway to prevent the Irishman following,
The Truth
During the Paleogene period (62-65 million years ago), Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity, when highly fluid molten basalt intruded through chalk beds to form an extensive lava plateau. As the lava cooled rapidly, contraction occurred. While contraction in the vertical direction reduced the flow thickness (without fracturing), horizontal contraction could only be accommodated by cracking throughout the flow. The extensive fracture network produced the distinctive columns seen today. |
