[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was a photo taken at the Dun Laoghaire horseshow. There was plenty to be seen that day, with all the horses jumping, a fair, things to amuse the children etc. But, when taking photos I noticed this scene. I thought it was a lovely image. Everyone was watching the horses jump except for this little girl. Her mind was obviously wandering.

So, I thought I'd enhance the photo. I desaturated the image, and then just added back her natural colours. I also added a nice frame to it all.

This is one of my most favourite photos to date.

** I've posted a workshop of the photo without any frame around it. **

Hi Paul, beautiful picture, very good catch. The selective desaturation works great here (it doesn't always). I am not too fond about the frame, as I think it pulls the attention away from the image. (but frames are sooooooo debatable).

Great shot,

Marleen

HI Paul

I like your work on this picture its well done. I'd suggest maybe a grey border with it instead of the colour, buts doesnt mean what you have done doesnt work

HI Paul,
I like how you Have desaturated most of the shot to make the child stand out. I works very well.
I'm not sure about the frame though, IMO a black frame would have been better,
I like the composition and how the child is looking a different way to everyone else.
Great work
:)

I like the photo I agree on the note except the frame.

Hi Paul.
Well-noticed and enhanced situation. I also not sure about frame, agree with Marleen it takes attention out of main subject, IMHO, maybe darker colour will work better. But overall very interesting composition.
Alla.

This is really cute, and her red hair really suits the selective destauration choice. LOVE how she's looking the opposite way.

Hi Paul,

Your PP is a lovely idea for this nice shot... but your frame... I agree with previous member's comments on this point ;o)

Take care,
Martine

Great shot,
well done

Hi Paul!

Hi Paul,

I like the work you have done on this picture with this little girl that is very different from the rest of the croud. Excellent capture. TFS

Hello Paul !

Great photo, but like many , I must admit , I personnally think the frame is not helping, but it is deteriorating your photo.

Martine ( Savignole ) frame is indeed classic. But it is more effective.

Cheers!
Robert

Incredible photo! The girl is so qute! And I like you idea about B/W photo with the natural colours girl.

But frame... I think just plane white border will me better

Hi Paul,
that's a lovely picture :o)
great PP as well. as to the frames... i do prefer the white one.
Great shot anyway.

Super! I like this technique a lot - and use it quite a lot I guess. I'd use the black frame, maybe with a tine line on the inside of it.

Did you try sharpening the image?

Keep them coming, c u around on TL...

Marcel

Showed boring of child very pretty (beautiful). I look (look) and I see loss but at the same time something that find (be placed) attract she (its; her; it) note.

hi paul,
not so sure about the frame but the shot is very nice.u captured a lovely moment.generally children are able to give such great poses in crowds, because they cannot pay attention to general preferances of the people;they have their own world and the photographer should knock their doors.
regards

I like this one big time. Desaturating all but the little kid was the best thing you could do becouse she defenitely stands out from all the other people in this picture.. or is it the other way around...? Well done.

Hi Paul. I like the selective colours only on the child - it makes a strong image and statement. Lots of PJ value in this image telling a story of .....

I agree with the rest of the people about the frame. I will try and post a workshop to demonstrate my ideas about the frame. Sorry, can't seem to get the option activated to post a workshop; however, what I have noticed, is that you must select a colour from the main attraction in the image that will get the focus - the frame will then draw the viewer's attention directly from the frame to the focal point that you emphasized. The eye normally searches the image for similar colours as those in the frame.

Hi Paul!

A Great picture! It's a lovely way to show how to handle correctly with the desaturation of a picture! You manage to emphasize the little's expression perfectly!
Very interesting composition!
Congratulations.
Luci

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope that I'm not that late by saying it :)

Excelent personal touch, Great Work Paul!

I like your idea with the selective colour. It perfectly isolates the feelings of this little girl.

Joe

Very nice photo.
Lucio

Hi Paul,

Wonderful photo! I like a lot the B&W look, as it isolates the crowd from the girl and make us consentrate on her and her thoughts.
I'm not sure about the frame. I would say that 'Savignole''s frame is perfect for your composition (IMO). :)
Well done!
Constantinos

Excellent photo Paul. Great pp work, really good stuff.
jaco

Bravo Paul!!! I'm absolutely taken with this photo. It's as if this little girl is in her own little world. By desaturating everyone else it enhances that feeling of "aloneness" for her. The only change I would make is to drop the frame. The yellow is a little distracting. Maybe a different color...?? Very nicely done though. Love it....
Cheers!
Mo

Hi! Paul, I think you have done a fine job here with this lovely study. You have captured these people very naturally and totaly unaware of your presence. The lost child effect is so Irish and safe here and the PP on her is excellent. This might be your strongest area of photography as it is my favourite of all your posts. Candid work is a speciality and the ability to work un-detected is very hard especially with a big camera.
The WS you did without the border is spot on and gives emphasis to the little girl. I like it alot and it is perfect. TFS.

Mike.
