ในระยะแรก อะลิฟใช้แทนเป็นลักษณะที่มาจากอักษรฟินิเชียน ปัจจุบันนำมาใช้แทนสระเสียงยาวเช่นเดียง.กับวาวและยาอุ ทำให้เกิดความคลุมเครือว่าอะลิฟตัวนั้นแทนเสียง หรือสระอา อักษรอาหรั.บปัจจุบันจึงเพิ่มฮัมซะหฺใช้แทนเสียง , ซึ่งปรากฏไ, ด้ทุกที่ภายในคำ เขียนทั้งโดยลำพังและเกาะกับอักษรอื่น :))
