[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Roma, Piazza Navona: Fontana del Moro by night. This fountain was built by Giacomo della Porta, but the central statue was added later and was created by Gianlorenzo Bernini. The rather "foreign" look of the centre statue provided the name.

It is said that the Piazza Navona is the loveliest square in Rome... and I agree. It's built in the Middle Ages on and around the tribunes of an ancient stadion from 86 AD. There are lots of restaurants and pavement cafés, and it contains three fountains.

After having enjoyed a lovely dinner to celebrate our last night in La Bella Roma, we walked to our hotel and I took the chance to take some night shots. As I hadn't taken my heavy tripod along, I used the small table tripod and put it on whatever surface that was stable enough: dust bins, benches, marble pedestals... You name it, I tried it ;o).

The white "statue of liberty" in the back is a street artist. I admire them for their ability to stand perfectly still for a long while - I bet they don't need tripods at all ;o).

Tech talk

I usually use exposure bracketing for night photography. As I didn't really have enough time, I only used one exposure here... as I shoot in RAW as well as jpg, I feel I have enough postprocess possibilities.

For this shot I started PP from the jpg.

Corrected a slight tilt.

Cropped.

Downsized for TL: 72 » 1200 dpi, 3123 » 800 pixels, USM 80 %, 0.3, 0, 1200 » 96 dpi.

What I do like here is the sharp lines of the statue, enhanced by good focus and orange light.
I'm in two minds on the lamppost and sharp light just left of the statue. Should it be there or not? and if it stay, should the photo be cropped where the building start (just to the left of the lam post)?
Maybe by using is shallow dof (wide open lens) the buildings and people in the background will stop competing for attention and the statue will get the attention it deserve.
I prepared a ws and then only noticed you have this turned off)

Eh bien, voilà une bien bonne photo de nuit Frank. On sent bien l'atmosphère d'une chaude soirée d'été. Le lampadaire est peut-être de trop mais il faut penser qu'on n'est plus au moyen âge et qu'on éclaire les rues de nos jours etc... il faut faire avec... Pas toujours facile de trouver le bon angle n'est-ce-pas? Les statues d'avant plan sont bien nettes... bon travail...

Well done on this capture and lighting.
I agree with Andrei, a vertical composition excluding all mentioned would be a stronger composition. Having stepped a few more feet to your left and turning in to the Statues would exclude the lamp and have the building as your background. Just another POV. ;)

I like the warm, ambient, orange color. Good sharpness & dof, with a well managed time exposure, under what look like tricky lighting conditions. Congratulations!

I like this nightshot of the beautiful city of Rome. The colors and lighting are very nice and well composed. But I noticed two things that I didn't like too much:

1. I found your frame too tight. A few steps back would be good
2. I don't like how you put the lamp into your frame. i think, if you turned a bit to the right and put the statues to cover the lamp would be more nice.

Great composition under difficult lighting conditions. Even without Exposure Bracketing, it still turned out well!
Razor sharp details and something we don't see everyday. My nit pick, a much tighter crop so centralize only the main statues. :)

Yes, I remember the Piazza Navona, but we saw it in daylight. The warm tones of the lighting here is good, and I like the lamppost where it is. And it is interesting to see all together the real people in the BG, plus the Statue of Liberty, along with the beautiful old fountain statues.
It's funny how you explain the difficulties you had shooting this, yet people keep suggesting other POV's, angles, etc.

hi Frank, i had been there recently, and i must say, at night, the effect is totally different. you have captured this very strongly, i actually like the people at the background, makes the piazza seemed so much more alive, if u could even have another person walking pass in the foreground:) great control of the technical aspects (which i am bad at).....thanks for sharing this! makes me miss Italy more....

Kan het projecteren en terug voelen.
Wat een schoonheid. Goed vast gelegd.
De lantaarn als helderste deel in de foto vraagt veel aandacht.
Heb je overwogen deze er uit te clonen of doe je dan voor je gevoel de foto te veel geweld aan? Wat mij betreft kan hij blijven vanwege de centrale positie je gaat er toch omheen kijken en alles is zo overduidelijk lantaarn licht.
Mooi man en een fijne herinnering
