[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Roma, Piazza Navona: Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by night.
After having enjoyed a lovely dinner to celebrate our last night in La Bella Roma, we walked to our hotel and I took the chance to take some night shots. As I hadn't taken my heavy tripod along, I used the small table tripod and put it on whatever surface that was stable enough: dust bins, benches, marble pedestals... You name it, I tried it ;o).

This fountain was built by Gianlorenzo Bernini. It is one of the three fountains in that square, of which he built two; for the third one he provided the central figure.

Central top part is a huge obelisk, here I show only its base... the lower part consist of several figures and four large statues of people that stand for the four largest rivers of the world, known at that time: Nile, Ganges, Donou and Rio de la Plata. In the back on the right, with covered face (as the source was not yet discovered) you can see a glimpse of the Nile. On the right, holding an oar, is the Ganges. On the left, with the arms stretched out, is the Donau.


Tech talk

I usually use exposure bracketing for night photography. As I didn't really have enough time, I only used one exposure here... as I shoot in RAW as well as jpg, I feel I have enough postprocess possibilities.

For this shot I started PP from the jpg.

Cropped slightly, getting rid of some unwanted people on the sides.

Downsized for TL: 72 » 1200 dpi, 2856 » 800 pixels, USM 80 %, 0.3, 0, 1200 » 96 dpi.

Hi Frank,

Amazing night photo! Those statues look huge compared to the people standing there. The ghost effect produced by the slow shutter really compliments the photo very well.
Is this a -1EV or 0EV exposure value?

Ah how classically beautiful, and yet the lighting on the image gives it a unique flare. It's almost sepia, but not exactly... I just love how the black sky brings out evey curve and edge on those stunning statues... so very, very beautiful. It's odd really, how the people who live there 'must' find it beautiful, and yet (like me) I see the mountains and the forests everyday and I know they're beautiful, but now I hardly notice it... tsk, tsk people, how spoiled. :P

Wonderful shot, really nicely done. The people and the lighting add a contemporary flare. Good stuff.

Tu nous présente Rome du façon remarquable avec ces chaudes couleurs nocturnes. J'aime bien aussi l'effet de mouvement des gens qui donne de l'action à cette photo. Très bien réussi.

Ah, this is another place we visited on our European trip in May. Piazza Navone with all the beautiful statues and fountains, and entertaining street people. I have some shots of a man juggling with blazing torches in this square. This one is very nice - the night lighting adds a special touch. I think my shots that I took there this year were all in the daylight.
