Manarola, Cinque Terre

| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
On the eastern stretch of the Ligurian coast, just before the "boot" of Italy stretches away from the European continent, five towns cling to the steep coastal hillsides. Known as "Cinque Terre," or Five Lands, these five towns have a unique charater, so unlike the rest of Italy that they are today protected by a national park.
What makes these towns unique? For one thing, until the 20th Century, they had no link to the rest of Italy exept for by boat and by small footpaths over and around the hills. The villages made their living from the sea and from what they could scrath out of the hills. Over time, the hillsides were terraced, and lemon trees, olive trees, and grape vines were planted in the rocky soil. Now, these towns rely more on tourism than anything else, but the olive oil, the wine, and the lemoncino (lemon liquor) are still grown on the hillsides.
My second visit to Cinque Terre was during my two-week R&R leave from my deployment to Southwest Asia, so these towns hold a special place in my heart. This is a typical "street" scene from Manarola, one of the five towns. There are very few roads in Cinque Terre, because the towns themselves are as terraced as the surrounding hills. The buildings are separated by narrow alleys, as space is at a premium, and stairways thread among the levels. |

Hi Christian, I have been to Manarola, what a great place to visit. i just wish I had had a digital camera back then.
I do like your scene here. The place is so steep and there are so many steps and I do like this composition. Well done, and thank you for sharing.
Janice
Very beautiful colors. I love the POV and the fact that the photo is dark on the bottom part and brighter as you go up the stairs. The contrast with the red and the stones is very good. Lovely composition.

I love this sort of shot. There is nothing nicer than getting completely lost in streets like these. Great POV and lovely muted colours.
p.s. please don't tempt me with IR filters - I am already looking at them :-) I loved your IR phot from the other day
