One of hundreds of actors dressed up in Medieval garb as part of a once a year procession through the streets and piazzas of Florence. Most had either medieval weapons or flags. It has to be said they looked very convincing, it was like seeing a movie being made, like nothing else i've ever seen.

Notes about the festival from the web:
As far as a precise date is concerned, the origin of this sports event dates back to February 17, 1530 when Florence was besieged by the imperial troops of Charles V and in Piazza Santa Croce a match was disputed between the "bianchi" and the "verdi" in sign of contempt and to provoke the enemy.

It is known for certain that a sport with similar characteristics and called "Arpasto", was practised by the Roman legionnaires of ancient Florentia and its playing recalls the battle order of the Roman army.

In the 1500's it was played mainly in the large piazzas of Florence (Piazza Santo Spirito, Piazza Santa Maria Novella and Piazza Santa Croce) where the playing ground of sand was prepared to host the encounters of the four teams, "verdi, rossi, bianchi and azzurri," which represented the Florentine districts of the period: San Giovanni, Santa Maria Novella, Santo Spirito and Santa Croce.

Matches were held for Carnival or for special recurrences and the particularly rough sport was practised by the young nobles who sought with their ability to conquer the hearts of noble Florentine ladies.

The tradition of Calcio Storico continued almost uninterrupted until the XVIII century and fell into disuse until 1930. Since then, three games are played regularly every year between the end of June on the occasion of St. John's Day, patron saint of Florence, and the beginning of July.

Olá Murray,
That is very good "catch"! Clear, sharp, against blurred BG and exceptional POV. Nice colors and very good lighting.
TFS,
Raimundo

Hello Murray,
He looks very intense, his costume is most decorative and well captured. I bet you have taken lots of photos from this event. Again I do like the f/6.3 setting as it beautifully blurred the b/g. Regards.

Hi Murray

A superb head & shoulders portrait with a good capture of the guards contemplative expression. Excellent use of a shallow dof, with nice colour contrasts & good shadow detail. Tfs!

Great candid portrait Murray .. I agree, it looks very convincing!
Nicely composed shot, and nice and sharp where it counts. GOod detail on his skin, beard, and costume.
Great shot

Excellent portrait.

Regards.

I'm starting to think there is a secret cameo lineup in this parade, Murray. This fellow looks like Jean Reno, a French actor.

Perhaps a little looser on the crop? Might have been better not to cut off the back edge of the hat, or the plume on top ... depending on how high it went!

Hi Murray,
Nice lighting on the chaps face, and good detail too.
I should imagine the detail before sizing down would be superb.
I just notice your visit to my polo shot. My wife has got a 50D too, just stunning.
You should really enjoy yours, and capture some beautiful images.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hi Murray,
Being interested by history, specially the middle age and the renaissance area which hold so many intriging, some almost unbelieveble stories and tales. An area where fashion, meant a lot more then merely decorative. Status, rank and duty.

Nice sharp focus picture, well detailled and crop. Good dark and light areas, nice spread of tones. Good color saturation, althought I do find it a little too magenta, nothing drastic at this point)) merely a matter of preference. Job well done..)))

Perfect.!
Excellent shot of this close up, Murray.
Shapness on the face and the blured background make this an excellent picture.
