This painting was taken in «Statione de Santa Maria Novella», in Florence. When I took the photo I thought that emigration would be a great theme to a TL posting. I thought it would be interesting to write about Italian emigration, so many are the books and films about Italian people in the United States, but also in Brazil and Argentina.

Now I realise that most of these stories about emigration (Italian, Irish, Jewish, Spanish or Portuguese…) has associated certain cultural clichés and prejudices. For example, the Portuguese emigration to Brazil in the 60s is associated to bakeries, has the Jewish emigration is associated to the «Nazi persecution», and the Irish to «IRA refugees». So, the generalized idea of Italian and/or Sicilian emigration associated to mafia is nothing more than a preconception, and a cultural cliché.

The truth is that European history of emigration had several different reasons, mainly a 1st world war (and after a 2nd) that destroyed almost all the structures, industry, and agriculture, and create a mass unemployment. In this context the generalized emigration was faced by the European leaders as part of the solution to the enormous social and economic crisis.

The railway station of «Santa Maria Novella» was opened in 30th October 1935 (Mussolini time), still exists, and still speaks to who arrives there about those that had to leave their country in search of survival — not of a dream like most of the films tell…

37 years later, 1972, in Lisbon, my parents had gone to see “The Godfather” (the film of Francis Ford Coppola). I felt really upset for not going with them. I promised myself that when I had enough age I would go to see that movie, and some years later I saw it.

Film: «I have a sentimental weakness for my children, and I've spoiled them as you can see…They talk when they should listen….» (Don Corleone in «The Godfather», by Francis F. Coppola)

Fact: many times even the countries do not take enough care of his children — his people — and this can be a reason for emigration.

T.
Ps. This photo is dedicated to all Italiens TL friends. I had time to see some of them and others I hope to see them soon.

hello Teresa

Quite interesting to read your note about emigration. It may be that the world becomes what it is today due in large part from European emigration. It started as colonialisation, the emigration. 1st War, 2nd War. And we have not the 3rd one yet although it could happen and might be the last, who knows? I saw the Godfather and being young and not too knowledgeable about Europe history or Italy. The painting showing 1935 era would be a time of exodus just before the 2nd war?

I am thinking...I have never seen or been to Italian but I have visited the section of Italian street in NYC. Good for you to share this.

Greetings from Borneo.

Good morning Teresa

Your note on emigartion is a real documentary. We have experienced it as a nation too and it is sad side to the main currents in Europe, including the civil war in Greece in the 50's. Rxcellent composition with this beautiful painting.

Thanks for sharing

Hi T.,
You have, as few, the gift of a very special look. Your eyes see, and your photos show, things that most of the time we cross all the time, without see them. This a perfect exemple.
Your POV is fantastic; the photo captures the paradox of the time running inside fixed moment eternalized in a painting. Superb.
Thanks for opening my eyes so many times.

Beautiful colors, image and details.

Ciao Teresa..
thanks for this dedication.. even if it's sad to see.. that we export our image only by these clichè so uncomplite: as mafia.. pizza.. e mandolino.. ;)) it’s not you, of course.. but unfortunately this is true in general..
emigration of Italians in the modern age happened in different periods.. but always was caused by the extreme poverty of people in my country..
at the end of 1800 and beetween the 2wars.. a lot of italians went to south and north America.. but also after 2nd war.. we had a lot of people.. that came in germany, belgium, switzerldand, france, england.. and all over in the north of europe..
they came.. expecially from the rural parts of my country.. the poorest.. to arrive in places where they be treated quiet as slaves..
the start of the mafia organization in USA.. was caused expecially by the worst conditions of live of the emigrants .. in the most of cases, the low conditions possible.. then they organized themeself expecially to survive..
American mafia was so different by Italian for a lot of years.. until the 1950.. in italy there wanst a big organization.. or not so organized and important like in Usa..
sure here there were outlaws.. but there wasn’t bosses so important like Al Capone, Lucky Luciano.. etc etc.. and surely not with those kinds of so rich business..
after 1950, and a good example is pizza connection.. mafia became international.. as a multinational company.. it’s only by the american jobs.. and the alliance during the second war with US Army.. that “cosa nostra” became so international and so strong also here in italy..
than we could say.. that mafia was builted as an international company expecially in USA.. exporting that model of multinational modern outlaw company also here in italy.. ;))
About the mafia world.. if you want to take an upgrade (the godfather is enough ridiculous today). I suggest you the book.. “Gomorra” by Saviano..
theme of emigration.. it’s often a sad theme.. and also in my personal and little tale.. I could say to be an emigrant.. from Rome! being an emigrant often you live not so pleasant experiences.. even if.. we should know.. that in everything new.. there are always big opportunities.. to learn and to develop (melting pot is not always so bad.. inst it?) ;))
it’s corious.. you was thinking to this theme of emigrants here.. Florence central station is enough out of that idea… it’s big example of “razionalismo architettonico italiano”.. so far to the fascism architecture style.. of that age.. one of the first modern station in Italy and in Europe.. when everything is ideated to be, first, useful.. ;)
detail you have taken is really interesting and there is something really moodly in your capture.. by your note also, of course..
I’m not able to understand exactly the place you have taken it.. even if I know enough well that station! ;))
a big hug Teresa..
many thanks
ciao Marco

Hello Dearest Teresat,

Giorgio

Ciao Teresa. Sorry could not meet you. I hope for the next one. Good POV and very intesive taken. Thanks.

Roberto

I am late... I am always late these days =( but I need to add my comment here, as TL friend, as Italian and as a permanent emigrant to Northern countries.
but first of all the picture: it's an interesting detail you captured here, usually Florence features in classic Renaissance images, while you have chosen a modern mural painting which dates back to a precise time in Italian history. so first of all thanks for posting something not so obvious about Italy.
secondly - the waiting parlour. I have been through so many of them in my life... it's a cliche', I know, but it's really a metaphor for life. waiting for your train to arrive, these long stretches of time that fill you with anticipation, or with nervousness - sometimes I have the impression I am mentally still there, waiting for my train to show up.
and then emigration... it's funny, I have been living abroad for the most part of these last 20 years and all the times I had to move to a new city, I ended up doing it by train. so I have looked like a real emigrant, with lots of luggage to carry, searching for people to help me move my stuff from one train to the other - but I can't even imaging how they did it in the old days (30 days on ship to NY...?). when I moved to Germany for the first time, many years ago, I could still feel the old prejudices on my skin. Italians - loud people, invasive, pasta-eating people, smelling of garlic, disorganized, lazy... that's how some people still saw us then. then I moved to Holland 12 years ago, and I was caught in the "style wave": suddenly we were world champions in style and fashion, masters of design, true experts in the art of good living, supreme connoisseurs of cuisine, food and wine...
and notwithstanding this, the image Italian companies propagate abroad is still full of all the cliches linked to the traditional, agricultural country we used to be - you just need to watch the average Bertolli, Barilla or FIAT TV commercial. this is what sells abroad.
Abroad, they still like to mock us as the mafia-country, transforming a social and political plague into a caricature and thus denying it the attention it deserves. in that sense, Marco is right is mentioning Saviano's Gomorra: anyone who has read this book should find it impossible to turn it into a cliche'. this is a book that (also) talks about children - the children of a certain Italy that no one takes care of (apart from the Camorra, that is).
thanks for giving us this food for thought.

Hi Teresat,
Yes, the emigration is a good theme for TL! Without emigration, no global world would be possible. And global energy and philosophy are necessary to make a best world. That does not prevent anybody from keeping his values and his cultural heritage. All immigrants people, everywhere they come from, do print their own culture where they stay. The best like worst. This is with their own heart's intelligence that a citizen can take the best influence and grow with that.

Your photo shows the sadness that the painter put on the emigrant faces. A last glance behind them too! The clock points out to us that they had to wait until the last minute before going up on boat or train bringing them towards a better world!

Very good work and thoughtful note! This is a pleasure to see you are back! Annie

Hi Teresat,

very symbolic photo.
Many looks...mostly sad and suspicious of uncertainty that accompanies them with a clock showing almost 15 till 4. Time has stopped for this people as I can feel it from the man behind the clock...Life has stopped for them as they have to involuntary leave their beloved place and go.
Excellent note to go with it and make it one unique presentation.

regards,
jeri

Such a powerful posting Teresa, amazingly robust and deep.
I do not know first hand, but as an Italian American, I am somewhat familiar with the stereotypes.
This image if very moving and it surrounding a clock perhaps appropriate. So we shall never forget.

Hi Teresat:

Magnificent shot companied by excellent note. I think it is the chaos in the original country and the promise of a better life that makes people immigrate to other parts of the world. But the mother land is always in their hearts and can not be forgotten.

Hi Teresat, time goes on but immigration lasts. Often is so difficult for people to accept different cultures and ways of life and it's sad too that the most clever young people have to leave Italy for finding a good work. Your work inspires me all the sadness of this problem with these men that quickly move on, ghosts without time.
