Linkin Park is a rock band from Agoura Hills, California. Since their formation in 1996, the band has sold more than fifty million albums and won two Grammy Awards.[4][5][6] They achieved mainstream success with their debut album, Hybrid Theory, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2005.[7] Their following studio album, Meteora, continued the band's success, topping the Billboard 200’s album charts in 2003, and was followed by extensive touring and charity work around the world.[8]
Recognized for their adaptation of the nu metal genre into a radio-friendly yet densely-layered style in Hybrid Theory and Meteora,[9][10] the band moved away from this and explored a variety of other genres in their latest studio album, Minutes to Midnight.[11][12] The album topped the Billboard Charts and had the third best debut week of any album that year.[13][14] They are also known for their several collaborations, most notably with rapper Jay-Z, in their mash-up album Collision Course, and many other artists on Reanimation.[10]
Early years (1996 – 1999)
Originally consisting of three high school friends, Linkin Park’s foundation was anchored by Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson along with Rob Bourdon.[1][15] After graduating from high school, the California natives began to take their musical interests more seriously, recruiting Joe Hahn, Dave "Phoenix" Farrell, and Mark Wakefield to perform in their band then titled Xero. Though limited in resources, the band began recording and producing songs within Shinoda’s make-shift bedroom studio in 1996.[1][16] Tensions and frustration within the band grew after they failed to land a record deal.[1] The lack of success and stalemate in progress prompted Wakefield, at that time the band's vocalist, to leave the band in search for other projects.[1][16] Farrell would also leave the band to tour with Tasty Snax and other bands.[17][18]
After spending a considerable time searching for Wakefield's replacement, Xero recruited Arizona vocalist Chester Bennington. Jeff Blue, the vice president of Zomba Music, had referred him to the band in March 1999.[19] Bennington, formerly of Grey Daze, became a standout among applicants on account of his unique singing style. The band changed their name from Xero to Hybrid Theory.[17] The newborn vocal chemistry between Shinoda and Bennington helped revive the band, inciting them to work on new material.[1] The band’s renaissance culminated with a change in name; from Hybrid Theory, the band changed their name to Linkin Park, a play on and homage to Santa Monica’s Lincoln Park.[1] However, despite these changes, the band still struggled to sign a record deal. After facing numerous rejections from several major record labels, Linkin Park turned to Jeff Blue for additional help. After failing to catch Warner Bros. Records on three previous reviews, Jeff Blue, now the vice president of Warner Bros. Records, helped the band sign a deal with the company in 1999. The band released their breakthrough album, Hybrid Theory, the following year.[19]
Hybrid Theory (2000 – 2002)
Linkin Park released Hybrid Theory on October 24, 2000.[20][21] The album, which represented half a decade’s worth of the band’s work, was edited by music producer Don Gilmore.[1] Hybrid Theory was well received by music fans; the band sold more than 4.8 million records during its debut year, earning it the status of best-selling album of 2001, while singles such as "Crawling" and "One Step Closer" established themselves as staples among alternative rock radio play lists during the year.[17] Additionally, other singles from the album were featured in movies such as Dracula 2000, Little Nicky, and Valentine.[17] Hybrid Theory was also nominated for three Grammy Awards, including best new artist, best rock album, and best hard rock performance (for "Crawling").[22] MTV awarded the band their Best Rock Video and Best Direction awards for "In the End".[1] Through the winning of the Grammy for best hard rock performance, Hybrid Theory’s overall success had catapulted the band into the mainstream's attention.
During this time, Linkin Park received many invitations to perform on many high-profile tours and concerts including Ozzfest, Family Values Tour and KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas.[17][23] The band also formed their own tour, Projekt Revolution, which featured other notable artists such as, Cypress Hill, Adema, and Snoop Dogg.[19] Within a year’s stretch, Linkin Park had performed at over 320 concerts.[1] The experiences and performances of the precocious band were documented in their first DVD, Frat Party at the Pankake Festival, which debuted in November 2001. Now reunited with former bassist Dave Farrell, the band began work on a remix album, dubbed Reanimation, which would include works from Hybrid Theory and Hybrid Theory EP.[17] The album Reanimation debuted on July 30, 2002, featuring the likes of Black Thought, Jonathan Davis, Aaron Lewis, and many others.[24] Reanimation claimed the second spot on the Billboard 200, and sold nearly 270,000 copies during its debut week.[25]
Meteora (2002 – 2004)
Following the success of Hybrid Theory and Reanimation, Linkin Park spent a significant amount of time touring around the United States. The band began to work on new material amidst their saturated schedule, spending a sliver of their free time in their tour bus' studio.[26] The band officially announced the production of a new studio album in December 2002, revealing their new work was inspired by the rocky region of Meteora in Greece, where numerous monasteries have been built on top of the rocks.[27] Meteora featured a mixture of the band's previous nu metal and rapcore styles with newer innovative effects, including the induction of a shakuhachi (a Japanese flute made of bamboo) and other instruments.[1] Linkin Park's second album debuted on March 25, 2003 and instantly earned worldwide recognition,[1] going to #1 in the US and UK, and #2 in Australia.[16]
Meteora sold more than 800,000 copies during its first week, and it ranked as the best selling album on the Billboard charts at the time.[28] Music videos for some of the album's singles, including "Somewhere I Belong", "Breaking the Habit", "Faint", and "Numb", received significant radio attention.[29] By October 2003, Meteora sold nearly three million copies.[30] The album's success allowed Linkin Park to form another Projekt Revolution, which featured other bands and artists including, Mudvayne, Blindside, and Xzibit.[1] Additionally, Metallica invited Linkin Park to play at the Summer Sanitarium Tour 2003, which included well-known acts such as Limp Bizkit, Mudvayne and Deftones.[31] The band released an album and DVD, entitled Live in Texas, which consisted of audio and video tracks of some of the band's performances in Texas during the tour.[1] In early 2004, Linkin Park started a world tour titled the Meteora World Tour, supporting bands on the tour include Hoobastank, P.O.D. and Story of the Year.
Meteora earned the band multiple awards and honors. The band won MTV's awards for Best Rock Video ("Somewhere I Belong") and the Viewer's Choice Award ("Breaking the Habit").[32] Linkin Park also received significant recognition during the 2004 Radio Music Awards, winning the Artist of the Year and Song of the Year ("Numb") awards.[32] Although Meteora was not nearly as successful as Hybrid Theory, it was the third best selling album in America during 2003.[17] The band spent the first few months of 2004 touring around the world, first with the third Projekt Revolution tour, and later several European concerts.[17]
Side projects (2004 – 2006)
Bennington appears on the band's behalf at MTV Asia AidFollowing Meteora's success, the band postponed working on a new studio album for the next few years. Instead, Linkin Park continued to tour and work on many side projects. Bennington appeared on DJ Lethal’s State of the Art and other work with Dead By Sunrise, while Shinoda did work with Depeche Mode.[17] In 2004, the band began to work with Jay-Z to produce another remix album, entitled Collision Course. The album, which featured intermixed lyrics and background tracks from both artists' previous albums, debuted in November 2004. Shinoda also formed a new band, Fort Minor, as a side project. With the aid of Jay-Z, Fort Minor released their debut album, The Rising Tied, to critical acclaim.[33][34] At the same time, the band's relationship with Warner Bros. Records was deteriorating rapidly on account of several trust and financial issues.[35] After months of feuding, the band finally negotiated a deal in December 2005.[36]
Linkin Park also participated in numerous charitable events. Linkin Park helped raise money to benefit victims of Hurricane Charley in 2004 and later Hurricane Katrina in 2005.[17] The band donated $75,000 to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation in March of 2004.[37] They also helped relief efforts for the 2004 Tsunami victims by staging several charity concerts and setting up an additional fund called "Music for Relief".[38] Most notably, however, the band participated at Live 8, a series of charitable benefit concerts set up to raise global awareness.[39] Alongside Jay-Z, the band performed on Live 8's stage in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a global audience.[39] The band would later be reunited with Jay-Z at the Grammy Award Ceremony 2006, during which they performed Numb/Encore, en route to winning a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.[40] They would later go on to play at the 2006 Summer Sonic music festival, which was hosted by Metallica, in Japan.[41]

Aceasta formatie canta de fapt nu-metal. Linkin Park inseamna rock, hip-hop, electronic, rock alternativ. Cei sase membri ai trupei sunt originari din sudul Californiei. Ideea trupei a aparut intr-un mic dormitor al vocalistului Mike Shinoda, unde acesta impreuna cu Delson au inregistrat primul material, in 1996. Cei doi fusesera colegi de scoala. Ultima piesa a trupei a fost vocalistul Chester Bennington, din Arizona, care facea inregistrari de la 16 ani. “Cind aveam doi ani, ma pasiona ce cintau Foreigner. De cand am invatat sa vorbesc, spuneam tuturor ca voi deven cantaret“, isi aminteste Bennington.
“Desi stilurile noastre sunt diferite, am incercat ca sound-ul sa fie natural, sa nu fie fortat - asta inseamna sa ai identitate ca trupa”, declara bassistul Phoenix.
Influentele vin de la Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin si The Roots.
“Vrem ca totul sa sune unitar. Inregistram totul intr-un computer pentru a putea sa fie bine integrate partile digitale si cele live. Petrecem ore intregi in studio mixind si aranjind totul astfel incit sa obtinem cele mai bune combinatii”, marturiseste Shinoda.
Dupa un timp aceasta formatie a ajuns sa renunte la vechiul ei solist, Mark Wakefield si sa se puna in cautarea unui nou vocalist care sa-l inlocuiasca pe acesta. Ei au trimis mai multe casete demo in toata tara (S.U.A.) la prietenii lor sau alte cunostinte, si au cerut oamenilor interesati de acest lucru sa-si inregistreze propriile versuri pe caseta demo si sa o trimita inapoi. Chester Bennington si sotia lui de-abia isi cumparasera o casa in Phoenix, Arizona cand un prieten i-a dat o caseta lui Chester. Chester a sunat imediat formatia in acea seara si le-a spus ca era interesat sa cante si el in formatie. Cei din formatie nu se asteptau la un raspuns atat de rapid si au fost surprinsi sa primeasca o reactie atat de rapida. Ei i-au cerut lui Chester sa cante peste caseta cu versurile lui la telefon, acesta asa a si facut, si astfel a zburat imediat la Cali.
Astfel cu Chester in formatie ei au inceput sa inregistreze. Produsul acestor inregistrari a fost EP-ul cu acelasi nume ca si al formatiei (Hybrid Theory - pe atunci). Folosind Internetul ei au format incet-incet un "street-team" si o baza larga de fani. "Street-team"-ul lor a fost si este inca foarte dedicat si a muncit din greu sa promoveze Hybrid Theory. Marea lovitura a formatiei a fost cand StreetWise Concepts and Culture, o companie de publicitate, a auzit cateva piese de pe Hybrid Theory si au pus o melodie numita "Plaster" (prima versiune a One Step Closer) pe site-ul lor ca o piesa a unei formatii de viitor. StreetWise a produs foarte multa publicitate formatiei si dintr-o data a fost un interes serios al tuturor de a asculta mai mult din ceea ce avea de oferit aceasta formatie.
Dupa ce au cantat la show-ul "The Whisky" din L.A. ei au semnat un contract cu compania Warner Bros. Odata cu acest lucru au inceput sa apara procese pe faptul ca numele lor se asemana cu numele unei alte formatii. Pentru a evita o bataie legala au decis sa-si schimbe vechiul nume. Astfel in onoarea Parcului Lincoln (Lincoln Park) din Santa Monica formatia si-a schimbat numele in Linkin Park. La putin timp dupa semnarea contractului ei au plecat in turnee foarte cunoscute si instantaneu au avut un mare succes. Odata expusi la o baza mai larga de fani ei au descoperit ca toata lumea ii iubea, si CD-ul lor a fost anticipat ca unul de mare succes. In Octombrie 2000 CD-ul lor de debut numit "Hybrid Theory" a intrat in topuri si a avut si inca mai are parte de un mare succes.
Formatia este absolut incredibila cu fanii ei. La terminarea unui show, in loc sa paraseasca scena, formatia coboara in multime si da mana cu cati mai multi fani si semneaza atatea autografe cate cer fanii. De multe ori cei din formatie stau pana cand se elibereaza arena si toata lumea a primit semnatura lor si a ajuns sa cunoasca formatia. Nu numai ca acesti baieti sunt cei mai sensibili si cu picioarele pe pamant din lumea muzicala, dar sunt si foarte muncitori si merita din plin tot succesul care li se atribuie...
Lansarea unui al doilea album se stie ca este o "afacere" complicata pentru orice muzician. Toti pot sa spuna ca au avut la dispozitie tot timpul din lume pentru a-si pregati albumul de debut, insa timpul care in acest caz le-a fost aliat, acum le este cel mai mare dusman, pentru ca toata lumea vrea sa asculte piese noi cat mai repede. Si ce se poate intampla daca albumul de debut a fost cel mai bine vandut album muzical din istoria recenta? Si daca industria muzicala se asteapta, la fel ca si in cazul Hollywood-ului, la un nou blockbuster? Acesta este cel mai plauzibil scenariu pe care membrii Linkin Park l-au avut in fata cand au intrat in studio pentru a porni inregistrarile pentru Meteora, albumul care urmeaza deja multi-premiatului Hybrid Theory.

Dar membrii Linkin Park, adica vocalistii Chester Bennington si Mike Shinoda, Chitaristul Brad Delson, DJ-ul Joseph Hahn, tobarul Rob Bourdon si basistul Phoenix Farrell nu s-au comportat in acest fel, ci dimpotriva s-au apucat de munca, ocupandu-se meticulos de fiecare element al fiecarui cantec. Astfel, atmosfera din jurul trupei a devenit nu una tensionata, ci una impusa de seriozitatea membrilor Linkin Park.
"Nici nu vrem sa ne gandim la faptul ca trebuie sa vindem 10 milioane de copii ale unui album de fiecare data. E ridicol", spune Bennington. "A fost o binecuvantare pentru noi sa vindem atat de multe albume; acest lucru nu se intampla prea des, chiar si sa reusesti o singura data in cariera acest lucru reprezinta o realizare fantastica. Avem obligatii fata de fanii nostri. Nu ne vom aseza confortabil sa asteptam ca lumea sa ne cumpere albumul". "Iar daca ne cunoasteti, veti sti ca presiunea nu vine din afara ci din interiorul trupei", spune Shinoda.
"Am vrut doar sa scoatem un alt album de care sa fim mandri", spune Bourdon. "Ne-am concentrat asupra acestui lucru si am muncit din greu pentru a crea melodii care sa placa atat publicului cat si noua. Noi suntem cei mai indarjiti critici ai pieselor noastre". Daca nu credeti acest lucru, atunci luati in considerare faptul ca Shinoda si Bennington au scris 40 de refrene diferite pentru primul single al noului album, "Somewhere I Belong", pana a ajunge la varianta finala.
"Stiam ca trebuia sa modificam cateva lucruri la piesa aceasta", spune Shinoda ridicand din umeri. "Deci am scris un refren nou, l-am inregistrat si apoi l-am mixat. L-am ascultat a doua zi, iar Chester si cu mine ne-am uitat unul la altul si ne-am zis... 'Nu stiu... cred ca ar putea suna si mai bine'. Si apoi o luam de la capat. A fost o munca continua care a inlaturat probabil tensiunea la care am fost supusi in urma succesului primului nostru album si a faptului ca acest al doilea disc trebuia sa se ridice la nivelul primului. Insa noi am ramas in continuare la fel de critici cu noi insine si am continuat sa scriem melodii cat mai bune, care sa placa si sa ne placa. Cativa se asteptau ca noi sa scoatem pe piata o versiune mai slaba a Hybrid Theory, care sa fi fost intrucatva mixata, transformata si care sa nu fi adus nimic nou, dar acest lucru nu este adevarat."
Rezultatele acestei atitudini au aparut imediat: Meteora. Cele douasprezece piese arata o maturizare a trupei, dar in acelasi timp accentuand legatura stransa dintre membrii Linkin Park, care se accentueaza din ce in ce mai mult, o data cu completarea formulei de catre Bennington in 1999. Colaborand din nou, la fel ca si in cazul primului album cu producatorul Don Gilmore, albumul a prins viata intr-o varietate de studiouri, chiar si in autocarul folosit in turnee sau in studiourile de acasa ale fiecarui membru. Astfel, in cazul acestui album cei de la Linkin Park au avut posibilitatea sa experimenteze o paleta intreaga de stiluri si sound-uri.
In piese cum ar fi "Somewhere I Belong" apare un mariaj fericit intre sample-uri triste si sunete "grele" de chitara. In "Breaking The Habit" si "Faint" apare pianul, iar in "Easier To Run" toate acestea se imbina cu efecte complexe. In "Nobody's Listening" apare un flaut traditional japonez denumit "shakuhachi" care accentueaza influentele hip-hop ale acestei piese. Toate aceste aranjamente muzicale deosebite si variate in acelasi timp se imbina perfect cu modul in care cei doi vocalisti ai trupei Bennington si Shinoda se completeaza reciproc. Acest stil muzical, oarecum original, al celor de la Linkin Park te invita practic sa le reasculti piesele.
In timpul unui tuneu in Europa in 2002 membrilor trupei le-a cazut in mana o revista care prezenta diferite destinatii turistice din Grecia. Pe coperta, cuvantul "Meteora" si poza care era alaturi le-au atras atentia. De aici imaginatia celor 6 s-a pus in miscare.
Meteora este un grup de sase manastiri care isi inalta varfurile la peste 1500 de picioare deasupra campiilor din centrul Greciei, care dupa cum spune Bennington "parca sunt de pe alta planeta", ceea ce este intr-o oarecare masura adevarat (pentru a vedea cu ochii vostri uitati-va la James Bond, jucat de Roger Moore, care ii bate pe toti in perimetrul uneia dintre manastiri). Din limba greaca cuventul se traduce ca "cel care se roteste in aer". Este un termen care se potriveste perfect atat zonei respective din Grecia, cat si albumului Linkin Park. Tot Bennington completeaza "vrem sa piesele pe care le vom scrie sa emane aceeasi enegie pe care o emana titlul".
"Este pe cat de epic, pe atat de frumos si se potriveste perfect cu mesajul pe care am vrut noi sa-l transmitem prin acest nou album" spune Shinoda. "Cei care viziteaza Meteora o fac pentru a se desprinde de stresul cotidian, pentru a fi singuri atunci cand simt ca trebuie sa ia o pauza si nu in ultimul rand pentru a se regasi pe ei insisi. Si de fapt, acesta este cea mai importanta tema pe care o abordeaza albumul si anume regasirea de sine. Fiecare piesa scoate la iveala sentimentele si emotiile ascunse adanc in suflet in momentul incare fiecare dintre noi incearca sa se regaseasca pe sine" completeaza Hahn.
De aceasta data Bennington si Shinoda largesc cadrul emotional prezent pe Hybrid Theory. In piesele de pe acel album, dupa cum spune Shinoda, era vorba despre frustrare, furie, frica si confuzie, toate aceste sentimente avand drept concluzie catharsis-ul, fiind privite din perspectiva unui tanar. Prin contrast Meteora reflecta vietile membrilor Linkin Park, care au luat o turnura tumultoasa din momentul din care a fost lansat albumul lor de debut. "Am realizat turnee in intreaga lume timp de doi ani. Doar acest lucru te face sa te opresti pentru un timp si sa privesti in urma ta" spune Shinoda. "Intotdeauna am incercat ca cele mai importante sentimente umane sa se confrunte in piesele noatre, iar albumul acesta contine astfel de piese. Insa Meteora este diferita tocmai prin modul prin care am reusit sa zugravim conditia umana in fata acestor sentimente". "Este totusi un album care prezinta fata intunecata a lucrurilor, dar care la origine este un album care degaja optimism" spune Bennington. "Suntem inca aceeasi, dar acum vedem o luminita la capatul tunelului".
Versurile piesei "Somewhere I Belong" de exemplu descriu teama si confuzie, dar refrenul aduce acel prim pas catre gasirea unui antidot pentru aceste sentimente. Bennington canta "Vreau sa ma vindec. Vreau sa simt ca sunt aproape de ceva real. Vreau sa gasesc ceea ce am dorit intotdeauna, undeva unde imi este locul".
In "Breaking The Habit" el spune "Nu stiu pentru ce merita sa lupt. Sau de ce trebuie sa strig. Nu stiu de ce spun ceea ce nu cred. Nu stiu cum am ajuns aici. Stiu ca nu e bine. Asa ca asta seara renunt la obiceiul acesta".
Inca o data, cei doi vocalisti canta impreuna pentru a aduce in prim plan un spectru bine inchegat de emotii si sentimente. Bennington si Shinoda sunt acum prin prisma atat a vocilor cat si a sentimentelor lor indivizibili. "Mike este un maestru al computerului si un foarte bun muzician" spune Hahn, realizand o diferenta intre cei doi. "Chester aduce la vedere emotia. Se completeaza reciproc intr-un mod 'yin-yang' formidabil".
Linkin Park @ "Summer Sonic" 2006De fapt intreaga trupa suna matur in Meteora, ceea ce este o realizare extrem de rar intalinita. Faptul ca fiecare dintre ei isi pastreaza propriile atribute intr-o trupa foarte bine inchegata cum este Linkin Park in acest moment este la fel de formidabil. "De fapt nu stam foarte mult sa ne gandim la relatiile care s-au format intre noi", spune Bourdon. "Ne simtim doar foarte norocosi si suntem extrem fericiti ca ne-am gasit unul pe altul si ca ne comportam atat de bine impreuna".
"Colaboram mult mai bine acum" spune Bennington. "Mike, de exemplu, ma cunoaste mai bine, la fel cum o fac si eu, iar acum ne este mult mai usor sa scriem versurile impreuna. In cazul nostru nu este posibil sa pastrezi secrete unul fata de celalalt. Trebuie sa iti deschizi sufletul, pentru ca si cel de langa tine sa faca acelasi lucru".
Bineinteles ca avand astfel de relatii atat de deschise unul cu celalat, nu mai ai nevoie de phiholog, cine mai are nevoie de psiholog?
"Exact", aproba Bennington zambind. "De altfel din acest motiv m-am si alaturat trupei".
"Unii oamenii cred ca noi suntem doar o trupa rock" spune Brad Delson, chitaristul trupei. "Noi credem ca in muzica noastra se imbina mai multe genuri, ca de fapt ea este un hibrid pe care l-am creat noi sase". Acest lucru este evidentiat cel mai bine de insusi titlul albumului de debut Hybrid Theory, in care poti intalni un gen muzical in care se imbina rock agresiv, rock alternativ, hip-hop sau electronic, un gen muzical original care a devenit practic specific Linkin Park.

Pierwotnie Linkin Park nosił nazwę Xero. Mniej więcej w czasie, gdy Chester Bennington odszedł od Grey Daze (obecnie Waterface) i dołączył do LP, odszedł ze składu Mark Wakefield (wokalista), nazwę zespołu zmieniono na Hybrid Theory. Idea tej nazwy polegała na zaznaczeniu tego, że Kalifornijczycy grają nietypową muzykę – hybrydę metalu, elektroniki, rapu, itd. Nazwa jednak okazała się zastrzeżona już przez inny zespół i chciano uniknąć problemów prawnych, w związku z czym zrezygnowano z niej (choć nie do końca, biorąc pod uwagę, że tak nazwali pierwszy album). Następnie rozważano różne inne nazwy dla zespołu m.in.: 'Clear' (ich ulubiona), 'Probing Lagers', 'Platinum Lotus Foundation', 'Ten PM Stocker' (od ulicy Stocker Street, gdzie mieszkał Mike i gdzie członkowie zespołu mieli próby. Jednak ściany mieszkania były bardzo cienkie i o godz. 10 wieczorem sąsiedzi zaczynali protestować). W końcu zdecydowali się na Lincoln Park (wziętą od Parku Lincolna w Santa Monica, gdzie mieszkał Chester). Ale i ta nazwa była już zajęta, przez zespół z Australii, który miał już zajętą nawet domenę internetową, więc ostatecznie, aby znów nie zmieniać całkowicie nazwy zespołu, muzycy zmienili swoją nazwę nieznacznie na Linkin Park.
