Besides the numerous remnants of ancient Rome, the magnificent fountains, beautiful piazza's and generally polite, friendly people, Rome has a dark side too... during our visit we encountered quite a few begging, apparently homeless people.

Of course this doesn't happen only in Rome; every major city in Europe has this problem, I guess. As a visitor, what can you do except handing them a few coins ?

Anyway, what caught our eyes here was this guy on the Piazza Navona, sitting here for a while, then moving on, accompanied by his two dogs. A large one, shepherd-like (that reminded us of Dingo!) and a smaller labrador. It was cute to see how that dog "played puppy" in the guy's lap. The dogs didn't look skinny so I think they were properly fed... I'm not sure about the guy though... Anyway, we dropped some money in his box and went on.

Looking back I was wondering how long that dog could remain still, and I decided to try a shot.

Tech talk

I put the little tripod on a dustbin and kept the ISO value low to get a longer exposure.

A tiny bit of croppity-crop.

Selected the person behind the subjects, copied to a new layer, lowered saturation by 10 % and applied some Gaussian blur to make him less prominent. Nothing else was altered.

Downsized for TL as per usual: 72 » 1200 dpi, 2946 » 800 pixels, USM 80 %, 0.5, 0, 1200 » 96 dpi.

The blur and movement add a plus value. I like those night picture lacking light, a good mood they have. Overall a nice photo that has a story with a camera i would like to have ;) Is the Labrador a common dog in Italy?

Hi Frank,
You are right, we posted about the same subject, sad but so realistic, a reality we cannot ignore and photographers must show it. In Rome or in Paris but also much more in Dakar where I was recently during 3 weeks.
About your shot, I love your choice of showing sharp the homeless and his dogs, because he is not "in the move" while people are much more interested by something happening in the district.
We perfectly feel the sadness and loneliness of the man.
Very well done, Frank ! Nice to see you on TL again.
Raining in Paris just now, big storm after the heat of the day :)
Sylvie

Hi Frank,

You've captured a very ghostly image! It's as if the guy and dogs don't exist, if you know what I mean...
I find it a sad but at the same time powerful composition that it's very familiar here too.
Well done!

Constantinos

Hi Frank.
Very good shot, I like it motion blur.
Good work, well done.
Thanks for sharing, best regards.

Yasin.

An interesting and effective picture, it very successfully highlights the concept.

Hi Frank! Nice low POV, street level or close to it is good. The fantomatic aspect of the pedestrians is very nice. I think it needs some cropping on the right side to remove the lady with her red pants and the sign, and get closer to ths subject. Good job considering the situation!

Hi Frank,
Very creative and excellent composition for this photo. I like how you've made this man lonely by having all the people blurred and moving fast around him. Very well done.
Luc

This is a very interesting shot. Well done. You caputured the sceene and the atmosphere well.
It is sad about the homeless. We should show them as they are normally invisible to us in our day to day life.
I apprecite the photo, it is beautiful in it's saddness.
The last two women on the right were pretty much motionless and I think need a little more blur. They distract from what you were trying to show. The homeless boy and his dog should be sharp.. the people who still are alittle in the background are that..in the background and don't distract as much.

Ho that's fantastic! That fantomatic effect of the long exposure! The light stay very interesting! That dark side is not a surprise... It is in most of the big citys!
Greetings!

Excellent shot and very creative. The slow exposure caught the ghostly figures very nicely and the main subject, is well focused. Difficult shot, well done!

Very nicely done, Frank. Not your typical tourist shot from Rome but more of a journalistic one. Very nice observation and good low POV. Nice PP work to create the phantom effect of the people around this young fellow who all seems to be ignoring him. I think the red pants lady on the right should have been blurred more like the other as she attracts too much attention away from the young fellow on the sitting on the sidewalks. Nice night shot. Well done!

Oops, I am all out of green smiles!

Hello Frank.
Greetings from Australia.
The photo has been well thought out.
The treatment of the people behind the beggar creates a sense of the beggar being so isolated from every-one.
This is an unusual and haunting photo. Well done.TFS.
Very best wishes,
Robert

Hi Frank,

I don't know about you, but I have to admit when I see people begging or just homeless people in general I get this feeling of dread, I feel so guilty and slightly annoyed. We all say it, but I still believe if people have faith in the world and themselves then they can break through the homeless barrier, the world is cruel but not impossible.

Anyways, I adore the movement in the shot... such a busy world, it's almost frightening. I'm too shy to take photos like this, I hate it when people watch me doing something. ANYWAYS! The colour/the idea and just the point behind the photo are both thoughtful and in a way, beautiful as well.

Well done Frank... as usual. :)

Biance.

The movements gives great atmosphere to this shot - well captured.

This is fantastic Frank. I like the way the people have natural motion blur in the background, and the way the young lad and his dogs are centred out as if everyone around them are obvilviant to their situation. Very creative thinking with the low ISO and speed. Nice work Frank.

Hi Frank, I thought of you when I was in Australia. I saw a man and his dog begging on the streets and I took a photo of them too. He said he is well looked after in the area he was in, and they did look shiny and clean - the man as well as the dog. Yes, I paid him for the photo.
I like how you have blurrred those around your man and his dogs - what a good idea showing the movement and also hiding the real them. . .

Janice

Really great capture, I love the motion of everyone except the guy and his dogs. Well seen, Frank!

Alli

P.S. Don't you have a birthday coming up soon?

Wonderful long exposure effect. It is also used to tell the story: the pedestrians just passed him (and his loyal companians) by. TFS.

Hoi Frank,

Ah maybe next time you shoul use a flash, it looks like there is not enough sharpness due to the long exposure time. :) Now seriously, nice image making good use of the lack of motion in the main subjects and isolating them that way. The only thing I would change in PP would be the white balance as it looks to red. But I am sure you saw that and this is the effect you want to create.

TFS,
Pedro

Quelle bonne idée d'avoir gardé l'attention sur le jeune homme en rendant flou tous les autres personnages ou presque (sauf la dame au pantalon rouge).Très bonne photo reportage Frank...

The movement of the people is nicely captured in this frame along with a well emphesised subject. Sodium lamp light is warming up the mood. Thus, a beautiful shot. Well done Frank.

Thanks for sharing a beautiful image.

ciao Frank
i was born in Roma.. Roma is my city...
yes.. always u can met some begging in the street.. with animals too.. not so good to see.. but it's life.. in every metropolis u can met some begging.. isnt it?

Thank you for the note.
