Signs...

Imagine: standing in the breathtaking large basilica of the St. Peter’s in Rome with your head in your neck staring upwards to the mighty dome. Than it might happen a ray of light is piercing through the openings in the top of the dome creating an amazing view. This happened to me in July 2001, which was a very dark year for me. I had visited this impressive cathedral before, but wasn’t so lucky as this time. The funny thing is you might see it as a sign (if you are religious) so I expected to see people who were also looking upwards might fell on their knees in prayer…but nobody did (neither did I for me it’s a natural matter; a ray of sunlight creating a beautiful view). Anyhow I took some pictures of it with me Minolta 300si, so it’s a scanned photo and did some PS-work. Due to the DOF the circle of the dome has become an oval shape; adjusting it made the view look very unnatural. So I left it as is. Hope you like it...

N.B. After the year 2001 my live brightened a bit more :)

PS-talk:
- scanned photo
- increased brightness (+5)
- decreased contrast (-3)
- cropped
- framed and add text [wrongly written is Sings and should be Signs. Thanks Linda!]

St. Peter’s Basilica

The Basilica of Saint Peter, officially known in Italian as the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano and colloquially called Saint Peter's Basilica, ranks second among the four major basilicas of Rome (St John Lateran, St Peter's, Santa Maria Maggiore and St Paul outside the Walls). It is the most prominent building inside the Vatican City. Its dome is also a dominant feature of the Roman skyline. Saint Peter's Basilica incidentally is also the patriarchal basilica of Constantinople whereas the Lateran Basilica is the patriarchal basilica of Rome. Possibly the largest church in Christianity it covers an area of 5.7 acres and has a capacity of over 60,000 people. One of the holiest sites of Christendom in the Catholic tradition, it is traditionally the burial site of basilica namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, first Bishop of Antioch, and later first Bishop of Rome. Although the New Testament does not mention Peter either in Rome, or martyred there, ancient tradition holds that his tomb is below the baldachin and altar; for this reason, many Popes, starting with the first ones, have been buried there. Construction on the current basilica began on April 18, 1506 and was completed in 1626, and was built over the Constantinian Basilica. The basilica also holds a relic of the Cathedra Petri, the Episcopal throne of the basilica's namesake when he led the Roman church, but which is no longer used as the Papal cathedra. It is believed that a piece of this cathedral, or chair, is contained within the altarpiece, designed by Bernini. (Text Wikipedia.com)

Hello my friend,
The architecture is wonderful. A wonderful view. That is a wonderful composition. Very good contrast. Beautiful thanks to and greetings.

Janusz

I wish you a beautiful and comfortable week.

Hello, Hans,
On the thumbnail the image appeared as an anciend copper plate to me :) But when I saw the larger image I guessed what it was. The ray of light really creates a beautiful view in this impressive dome. Speaking of emotional condition, people (religious or not) always look for their ray of light, no matter if it is literally or figuratively. So, I guess this was your ray of light. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Regards, Evgenia

Good detail and perfect frame!
Hi Hans, that's beautiful, special with the sunbeams, like god is looking inside.
Thanks and greetings

Tried to guess what the picture was from the thumbnail - but I got it wrong. Nicely composed shot and the frame really draws you into the focal point of the picture.

Hi Hans,

I have just about the same image of this "blue" dome in my collection of the Vatican. Yours however has these wonderful sunrays. Excellent timing!
Pitty though that you cannot have a clear look at the paintings...
I was wondering if this is a digital image or if it's a scanned one...??

I like the fact that you took out the rest of the ceiling and that you left just the dome there... Good idea!

Cheers,
Anneke

Hallo Hans,
Een mooi plaatje van de Sint Pieter. Prachtig zoals de lichtstralen door de koepel schijnt! Ook het zwarte kader maakt de foto duidelijker. Je weet waar het om gaat!
