[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The food markets in Italy are a photographer's paradise. Not only does the freshness of the food surpass most that is available in the US, but the variety and presentation is a visual feast. I had not seen this variety of tomato before in US markets, but the color and shape were well worthy of a photo or two.

You mention that you're a professional portrait photographer in your intro. I have absolutely no talent when it comes to portraits and don't even comment on them when they are presented on this site. You say you want to know what people see in your shots and in photograhy in general.
I'm more interested in texture, form, color and what a subject brings to mind or the senses it ellicits.
Fruit/vegetables are a good subject. I see you're impressed with Italy's produce. One should never compare the US supermarket produce with the rest of the world. It's homogenous "neatly symmetrical" ready-for-shipping processed and unnatural in many ways. Find a biological/local farmer in the States if you can. I've lived outside of the States for almost 20 years now and I see that things like this have only gotten worse there. Enjoy the food here in Europe.

About your photograph: here the sign is appropriate in my opinion, because it's hand-written and a bit of 'old-world'. The plastic containers in the tomatoes next to it are a bit of a distraction from the mood that you're expressing in your words and in the subject itself. I suggest you buy these, set up a still life of the vegetables you find unusual and apply some of what you know about portrait lighting/composition in a location where you can spend time with the subject.

Kind regards,
Jim

Hello Don, welcome to TrekLens
Lovely fresh tomatoes - and so different from what we grow in New Zealand. And a better price too :) And I see courgettes / zucchinis as well.
I saw a really interesting fruit and vege boat-shop in Venice. It was very popular
Thank you for sharing
Janice

Beautiful still life.

Don,
You got a good composition of form and colors here. The diagonal set of the boxes, together with the labels and sign, makes it very casual.
Living in Brazil, I know exactly what these street markets are like :)
Have a nice weekend.
Cheers,
Wellington

Hi, Don,
It looks very tasty and refreshing for a good summer salad:)

And, of course, welcome to TL.
Many happy hours in our modest company:)
