I confess that I arrived to «Piazza of St Peter's» in Rome with the prejudice that I would feel the weight of the Catholicism, and that this weight could harm my way of see the place.

There arrived, however, what I felt was pure fascination in the view of so great architectonic beauty and harmony of lines, what made me to forget rapidly that I was in the institutional centre of the Catholic Church.

And that was my great surprise: although headquarters of the Catholicism this do not impose to who visit the square out of its ritual times, what allows to all, Catholics or not Catholics, to enjoy the enormous beauty of the piazza.

The «Piazza of St Peter's» was built by the architect Bernini for order of Pope Alexander VII in 1656-67.
«Four rows of simple and majestic Doric columns — 300 all together — carved from Roman travertine form an oval 650 feet across the long axis marked by three monuments: laterally by fountains propelling tall jets of water and in the centre by an Egyptian obelisk that had served as a turning post in the chariot races at the ancient Circus of Nero».(*)

Wow!...and Wow!...
Parabens, amazing!!

Ola jose

A nice colour contrast between the yellow & blue. Good sharpness & well composed. I like the repetition of the vertical columns. Tfs!

:-) I have been there Jose on that same spot...
but, I didn't take a picture.... how stupid of me.....

I really like this angle and the colors. I get the feeling, that you have put another sky in the image. That makes the light a bit mysterious....

Cheers,
Anneke

Hi Jose,
Spectacular view on this magnificent place! I visited it in 2004 and I kept an unforgettable memory. I photographed these colonades in a vertical format (http://www.treklens.com/viewphotos.php?l=3&p=125907). I do prefer your wide angle revealing a strong sense of space.
Great force in your point of view! The colors of sky are unusual but they fit beautifully with this majestic place!
Bravo! Annie

Hi Jose,
A visual feast! Excellent POV, and good idea to include the sky too. Marvelous work!
Reagrds,
Subashini

hi Jose',
I am happy you posted this kind of wide angle shot of St. Peter's square, because it shows the magnificent amplitude of Bernini's work... you have to be there to feel it.
Catholicism can be a heavy burden - especially in a place like Rome, where it's impossible to forget it. everything reminds you of it. but this work of art of one of our best Baroque artists is something unique - it makes you forget your worries of human being doomed to fail and lets you enjoy greatness.
I was in Rome last week and I took a shot which is almost the opposite - the intimate inside of the "colonnato" instead of the its majestic width... I'll post it soon, for you!

Waow...
It's a HDR picture? it's splendid.
This explosion of color, and it works on dark and bright is beautiful. The wide-angle takes here all its meaning to capture this magnificent architecture.

A great picture,
Thx for sharing.

This is fantastic Jose! It's BOLD, strong and the columns stand out SO well here. They show the size and strength of these marvelous works of man! Nice processing, it really makes this stand out! Good job!

Hi Jose, I enjoy seeing your Italy series very much. The yellow-light brown tones give it a timeless appeal. As i plan to be there in June, it is a great way to become more familiar with this historic place. The columns add a lot to this composition, giving strength. TFS. Murray.
