[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Although it is called fig, the fig of India has in fact little to do with figs, which are all familiar. For a start it is born from a tree but a plant that is fat close relative of the cactus and then, rather than have the normal form of the figs, it looks like an elongated berry yellow, orange or red-violet, with a thick, tough skin sprinkled with bunches of thin spines. The flesh is tender and sweet, rich in sugars, but full of small seeds hard and woody.
It grows in all the countries bordering the Mediterranean, in southern Africa and California. In Italy it is common in the South and Islands, where it grows naturally and is also cultivated.
