Another photo from a scanned print.

The one thing I am not quite happy with is the very bright sky in the distance, at least on the right hand side it's bright grey and not completely white...

As I am for a natural look most of the time and wouldn't have known how to improve the sky or even paste in another sky (and at the same time, let it look natural), I just left it that way, trying to figure out what kind of a frame would be best. In the end I decided for a simple white one without the 1 pixel line on the inside that I sometimes use. The contrast with the white/grey sky was just not nice.

So - it's an old photo and just felt like posting it - it's not a great photo, but hopefully still a "nice" one (in spite of the not so great sky)...

Frank

P.S.: The original title was "Distance", but when two out of five used the word "space" I felt I had to change the title... :)

P.P.S.: Gayle said that "Space" reminded her more of "outer space" and Talisman said he preferred the original title "Distance"...

P.P.P.S.: I felt that "Space" reminded me a bit of outer space, too, but that I didn't feel that "Distance" was the right title... so I changed the title again... :)

P.P.P.P.S.: Michael was wondering where I was standing to be able to take this shot - the answer is - in my private helicopter... ;)

err... not quite! It was taken from the small "castle" tower in Populonia, an old Etruscan place in the middle of the Tuscan coast. Actually a very nice place for taking photos... :)

Frank
I think you were right to post this, it has something that some people are scared to portray, - space - and I think it works well
I like it
David

Hi Frank,
And the ocean is soooooo big! Very interesting minimalistic picture, quite different from your last posting! Versatile is the word I think? Pleasing and relaxing to look at, I like the way you give us a tad of horizon

Pablo -

Hallo Frank!
A 5***** picture!!
What more can I say?
One of my favs!
TFS!
Luci

Now THAT is what I call SPACE!!! Love it, (*_*)

Its so relaxing shot. We need to see photos like that to heal our soul with nature and peace. Thanks a lot..
Elif

Hi Frank,
What a great sensation of liberty when I watch your picture !
Keeped in confinement in my office, behind a big stack of files, your shot is a real blast of air for me, thanks !
I like the tiny boat lost in the left bottom and the great blue tones of the sea.
I think I would have cropped the little part of white sky…
TFS,
Martine

Well captured you really express how small the things of man are when compared to the works of nature. I see the sky line as necessary and effective to the overall composition. Just simply using te scroll bar to shift the sky off screen very quickly destroys the sense of distance, i suggest you should leave it there.

Well done
Gideon

INDEED! Excellent! Gideon is correct in the mention that the skyline is effective in your comp however you might of been able to cut right at the horizon and still have the space. I tried it and think it still works.
Great title, good post and love the tonal changes in the water. I do see some streakin from middle to right side running vertical but not sure if that's just the water or from the scan.
Where were you for this shot???
Great space Frank!

michael

Frank, I like how you captured the expanse of oen water. Even though it is framed, it feels like it goes on forever. I don't mind the brightness at the top. It gives the image depth and perspective. The tiny sail boat adds that much more depth and perspective. I wouldn't change anything about the image. The colors, comp, everything looks really good to me.

There is 5 smileys for you :) :) :) :) :) Minilalistic compostion with a great feeling of space. The operative word being space! Your POV is quite good. I dont think I would change anything either. Great Picture! TFS
Lakshmi

Brilliant use of emptiness Frank and there couldn't have been a better way of expressing the endless expanse. A grand composition.
Mukesh

Wonderfull Frank,
Very strong the way you show all this sea in front of the boat and letting the photo blend in with the frame.

nice minimalism
bravo

Amazing photo. TFS

This tiny detail, which we can find (have a good look:-)) in this picture is the main-object, what a great shot full of space, neverending, b(l)eautiful !

Great use of negative space. You have done a great job without using standard photography rules. Love the photo. Cheers.

wow. that is beautiful! Great colors and of course you composition is excellent. Nicely seen. not sure if you crop the top white part though. Not necessary but I think I would like it without the horizon. Very nice!! JP

Frank, the sky is not distracting at all. It looks like, it belongs to the frame. Very nice shot and I like the "lonelyness".
Nice shot.

Don

Hi Frank,

I finally decided to comment on this (yeah, I am slow today ...:)).

Like many have pointed out, I love the simplicity of this shot. The sky doesn't really bother me, maybe because it blends in so well with white frame. The wide line in the middle seems to be a nature's creation, but pale shorter lines - not sure what the origin is (result of scanning?).

Here's some wishful thinking: it would be cool if the shadow of this boat were to be more defined (maybe shooting it during a different time of the day would have made the difference, I don't know, maybe it wouldn't be noticable because of how high you were).

That's about it, and I think this is the longest comment I've ever written. :) Hope you haven't fallen asleep by the end of it. :)

Ciao,
Katya

P.S. I do like the picture. :)

Beautiful "portrait" of really wide space and a feeling of freedom. You can feel the wind and smell the sea

Frank, nice one! The bright and grey sky is hidden by the white frame, so you have covered it up perfectly. No problem there. The boat is strategically placed at the correct position, so composition is perfect! And you get a variety of real sea colours and textures on the water, so I think that is ok too. So ALL is well, and you have a great photo - and I like it. Well done.

Hi Frank,
A simple and trully amazing and effective composition. I like it a lot, but i would had crop a little on the top cause it looks like it's a bit overexposed. Very well done
Regards, António

Hi, Frank. Funny - when I hear the word "space" in this context I find myself thinking of "outer space." And I guess this is "outer space," except that it happens to be water instead of atmosphere! :)

The boat looks so tiny. Reminds me of how small we really are in the grand scheme of things. But...the boat is highly important to its sailors, right?

I vote for cropping off the white/gray horizon, as it looks incomplete to me. The rest is lovely, and the photo has obviously touched a lot of people! Well done!

Beautiful capture, Frank! I especially like the blue tones of the sea. The title is great & the sky doesn't really bother me. Well done, Frank.

Beautifull! It remain the expression "A drop in the ocean" :o) Great capture here!

Hey! How did I miss this one!! ...This is really nice Frank! I like it a lot. A very simple and yet very powerful composition. I like the portrait format as well.

P.S: I would have preferred "Distance" as caption actually.
Well done! :)

It was good to have the sea fill the frame and the composition is great where you have the boat taking up its space in the lower left.

Regards,

Tom

Brilliant shot. Love all the negative space. The colours are lovely. If it were mine, I'd crop the grey part out from the top. Only a suggestion. Very good work and congratulations Frank.

GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...... GOOD ONE FRANK :D... I LOVE 'THE SPACE' :D... IT FITS NICELY TO THE SHOT... :D... ITS VAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTT... ISNT IT? I LOVE THE BLUE! THE LITTLE BOAT LOOKS SO CUTE IN THE EDGE... I DONT MIND THE BRIGHTNESS :D... GOOD ONE WITH A VERY GOOD COMPOSITION AND A VERY BALANCED SHOT... PERFECT! :D...

TAKE CARE...
- HIMA.

what more can i say? Perfect!
great colours, great comp., great sense space. Just perfect!!

Congrats!!!

Take care,Stef :))

Hi Frank

A superb pov & perfect comp[osition but it appears to have a repetitive, vertical pattern, of faint, red banding. Maybe the xray scanner at the airport? Still a marvellous shot, though.

it seems that theirs brown streaks running down? i'm guessing your scanner had some sort of smears?

it's a nice photo otheriwse, i think you should have positioned the camera, or even cropped out the white horizon. otherwise, it's a beautiful shot. love the rich green of the sea.

cheers
-Bart

Amazing POV, great colours and shot,
is it the sea or did we see a very little horizon?

Frank, this is so beautiful and I do like the overexposed sky a lot as it gives a natural glow to the whole image. It was also interesting and amusing to read about the saga relating to the image title :)) I think that now the title is absolutely perfect!

Superb Work!!

Shelly:)

Really relaxing, appealing photo Frank. Great use of 'space' to achieve your objective.

Hello Frank, what a nice seascape! Well composed on the sailboat lost in the sea of blue :)

Take care, Yan

Bonjour Frank,
en un mot, cette photo est superbe... la compo et les couleurs sont resplendissantes, tu as su choisir un excellent angle de vue.
Bravo et merci,
Seb :)

So beautiful! Makes me miss Italy even more!! I love how the horizon as at the top of the page, as the shades of the sea intrique the eye as is. I bet a sunset/rise image similar to this would be breathtaking as well!
