The twelve trees…

Last days I was for business in Luxembourg. Had just a few hours to escape from the dull boardroom and made a walk through the magnificent Petrusse Valley which divides this wonderful city into two parts. It was a misty grey afternoon and the light circumstance became worse every minute. At the end of the valley there was a little square where these twelve trees stood. The houses in this picture are more or less build into the rocks of the valley wall. I could not resist to make a picture of this scene.

Luxembourg
The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg, French: Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, German: Großherzogtum Luxemburg) is a small landlocked country in western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany. It is the world's only sovereign Grand Duchy. Luxembourg is a founding member of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations, Benelux, and the Western European Union, reflecting the political consensus in favour of economic, political, and military integration. Luxembourg City, the capital and largest city, is the seat of several institutions and agencies of the European Union.(Text from Wikipedia.com)

For all the havoc that has been wrought on the City of Luxembourg by the many foreign invasions, it must be said that the occupiers, in particular the brilliant French military engineer Vauban, developed Luxembourg's potential and created one of the strongest fortresses ever built; so impregnable that Luxembourg became known as the "Gibraltar of the North", protected by 3 defensive walls with 24 forts, and honey-combed by a man-made 17 mile network of underground caverns, the so-called Casemates. The fortress survived in its greatness until 1867, when it was dismantled according to the provisions of the Treaty of London. Not surprisingly, it took 20 years to carry this out, even though some fortifications simply could not be destroyed, as the whole city would have crumbled away. The Petrusse Valley fortifications show this perfectly: part natural rocks, part man-made walls, gun-ports and secret passageways hewn into solid rock, providing the foundations for the elegant three-spired cathedral of "Notre-Dame de Luxembourg". This very valley has prompted that great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, not only to paint it but to write of it, in 1792, that "here such bulk is measured with so much grace, such gravity with so much loveliness, that one might wish that Poussin had put his splendid talent to work in such spaces." Today, the parklands of the Petrusse valley are a haven of peace, and a road-wheeled tourist train, the "Petrusse Express", runs through the Valley giving visitors an insight into life in the former fortress. Hello Hans,
Interesting... seems like they are growing out of rock!
After all they are 3 stories tall so most likely they are getting the water they need...
Well seen and nicely captured!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello Hans,
Very interesting subject and notes. Well seen and well presented. TFS Julie

Yes, I am crazy, I counted the trees and I can only see 11. Did you do that to drive me crazy?? It's just a short distance between my insanity and reality! HAHAHA! Now I will spend the whole day blowing the image up, looking for the 12 tree!! See what you do to me!?!?!
HAHAHA!

Hello Hans,
those trees are almost like a living piece of art. They sure liven up the scenery. Like the landscaper you compsed this photo so nicely. POV, colors and crop are wonderful. The framing does bring all together and shows it off so perfectly.

Wonderful image of these one dozzen trees. Crisp compostion and good luminar management. An interesting point of view has been chosen that is enhancing the greenry over pink background.

Thanks for sharing a nicely taken shot Hans.

Very nice shot! Great composition, DOF and colors. The exposure is very good and the presentation excellent.

Hi Hans
Your trees are charming. Entire perfect photograph. I am only thinking where the twelfth tree is.
Anna

Great image, Hans! The tight framing works very well here. The way it is shot, it is hard to get a sense of dimension; the whole scene could very well be a scale model! Good break from the boardroom!

hello Hans,
A good capture of what is in itself an elegant piece of landsacpe design.
interesting colours.

Well done and best regards, Daniel

Excellent compo, the nice houses with those trees in front of her. Excellent framing. I like those pink walls (very pleasant colour !) and those repetitive windows.

TFS,

Andreea

Great work Hans! hihi, likewise Linda, I had to count the trees but saw only 11, thx to Inaam's ws, I am ok now that I see the 12 of them lol!

Great composition and lovely colours. I like this image a lot and the lovely pink of the building and the well kept place.

Well done! Yan :)

Well seen, Hans!
I like the colour of the houses in contrast with the trees. The frame fits this colour as well. I also like the fact that you kept your title a bit subtle. But that's just my taste ;)

Very nicely done, Hans. I like the composition with the trees that seem to want to hide the houses. My only nit-picky comment would be for the inclusion of the blue garbage can on the left but I guess it is part of the urban scene. Nice contrast between the pink and the green of the trees. Well done!
