This is Mdina, also known as the Silent City, because though populated absolute silence reigns this place. This gives a unique feeling rarely felt anywhere else.
Malta's history has been one of conquest and colonization owing to its strategy in the middle of the Mediterranean. Among these were the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs, the Angevins, the Aragonese, the Knights of the Order of St. John, and the Brittish.
All these left their traces thruoghout the Island.
Mdina bears wittness of most of these, in the splendid Palaces and other architecture.
This ancient city has earned its name from the Saracens who came to Malta around 870 AD. They built the bastion walls around it, separating it from its nearest town, Rabat where this photo was taken from.
Dominating the city is the splendid Cathedral fronted by a large square. The Cathedral can be seen in photo, as well as the protecting walls around the city.
A magnificent view of the Island can also be admired from Mdina owing to the altitude of the place.
I took this shot last Sunday and you can observe the splendour of Spring, in the fields, though it was more like Summer with a temperature close to 25C in the afternoon. |

Hi! Salvu,
I spotted this straight away as Mdina, with it's unique Cathedral spires. The richness of the land is a rare sight for tourists who only travel there in summer. The composition here is lovely and is probably taken from the Northerly end of the approach road looking SE to St. Pauls Bay if my memory serves me well. I love the freshness of the fields and I can imagine the humidy is probably high at springtime here. The clouds are so painterly and a delight to see. I expect the herbal essences are most pungent too. Yes! springtime is my next Malteses appointment.
A truely delightful scene with perfectly lit elements.
TFS. Salvu. 10/10
Mike.
Hello,
really nice shot and composition; it seems to me you used something like neatimage to remove digital noise but it smoothed too much the walls and some of the green. TFS
Regards,
Alberto.
Hi Salvu,
In this case and in my opinion soft is good. Considering the ditsance you were from the buildings any extra sharpness would have looked false. Great POV, good natural colours. TFS,
David
PS Many thanks for your comment on Summerhill Views I
Beautiful shot of Mdina Salvu ! I visited it on an early hour (when most of tourists are still sleeping) and it was really calm and silent inside the walls...like paradise :O) I have a good friend living in Malta who told me I should visit it in march because the entire island is green then, when I see your picture of April, soo green, I can only agree :O)
This is my all- time favourite photo by Salvu, so far.
I am particularly impressed by the vivid colours of all of it: not only the bastions and the fields, but particularly, the cloudy sky.
The colours although vivid, are still natural and the POV is very good as well.
Well done,
Sacha
