Vladimir Leonov is the sole Russian representative in the MotoGP World Championship in 2009, competing in the 250cc class for his debut on the biggest stage. The twenty-two year-old rides for the Viessmann Kiefer Racing team in their return to the quarter-litre class, using an Aprilia LE.

Donetsk-born (Rostov region) Leonov has taken part in races across a variety of classes since his maiden competition at the age of twelve. Spells in 125cc and 250cc Motocross, Superstock and Supersport series have honed his skills and convinced Stefan Kiefer to sign him up for a big chance to shine as a category newcomer.

Should he open his Grand Prix points tally in 2009, Leonov would become the first Russian to do so in the 250cc class in the history of the World Championship.
