Large Clawed frog

Aquarium Noorder Dierenpark ('Northen Zoo'), Emmen. External flash through front pane of aquarium.
The Large clawed frog ( a pipid frog from Africa south of the Sahara) was formerly used to find out whether a woman was pregnant. The female frog was injected with the woman's urine and started spawning if the lady was pregnant indeed. This a so-called true water frog, i.e. it is supposed never to leave the water. However, it was reported by the famous dutch aquarium photographer Arend van den Nieuwenhuizen that his Xenopus laevis climbed out its aquarium at night to return in the early morning! |
