Another photo from my archive. I had this one ready for upload for many months but never found the right moment to post it.

This is what we call a Hunebed which is a tomb made by local farmers some 5000 years ago. The following is some information from Wikipedia about the Hunebed.

A dolmen (also known as cromlech (Welsh), anta, Hünengrab, Hunebed, Goindol, quoit, and portal dolmen) is a type of single-chamber megalithic tomb, usually consisting of three or more upright stones supporting a large flat horizontal capstone (table). Most date from the early Neolithic period (4000 to 3000 BC). Dolmens were usually covered with earth or smaller stones to form a barrow, though in many cases that covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact.

"Dolmen" originates from the expression taol maen, which means "stone table" in Breton, and was first used archaeologically by Théophile Corret de la Tour d'Auvergne. The etymology of the German Hünenbett or Hünengrab and Dutch Hunebed all evoke the image of giants building the structures. Of other Celtic languages, "cromlech" derives from Welsh and "quoit" is commonly used in Cornwall. Anta is the term used in Portugal, and dös in Sweden.

I just realized this was taken with my old camera and cokin filter. I guess I need to return to the location and see what can be done better.

Greetings Niek,
This to me, is a very strong image, the stones give strength without being overbearing & blend perfectly with the bared limbed trees,if the trees had been in bloom it may have not been as dramatic, great time to capture this scene.Vibrant composition

Lekker sfeertje!

Hi Niek,

A very striking image, well balanced composition.
Beautiful peresentation.

Ramon

My first digital slr too the 350d, don't think I got results as good as this though.

A cracker, well worth a revisit I'm sure.

But this has all the elements, great foreground interest, perfect exposure and point of view.

Nice one Niek

Hallo Niek,

Zeker geen saaie foto zoals meestal van hunebedden.
Mooi vanuit dit standpunt met de krans van bomen erom en de half bewolkte lucht erboven, geeft een mooi licht.
Groetjes, Marga
