Behind the horizon

Sailing on the IJsselmeer in a beautiful two mast klipper the "Waterwolf" I had the time to think about what's behind the horizon. So do the TL-guest maybe do when they travel this weekend to the Netherlands; what's behind the horizon? Holland? But what can we expect, they might think.....

Famous Dutch products and habits...

Drop
The best translation would be 'licorice', but 'drop' is quite something else. It is best described as a black, chewy kind of candy with a sweet and/or salty taste. The Dutch like it so much, that you can buy it in hundreds of different types. And none of them taste as the ones you can get outside the Netherlands.

Klompen
The famous 'wooden shoes'! They are still made by the thousands, but mostly for (American and Japanese) tourists. Believe it or not: they are very comfortable and are still used by farmers and gardeners.

Tulpen
Tulips. Who doesn't know these 'typical' Dutch flowers, that originate in Turkey, look like onions or leek most of the time and come in so many varieties, that you get the impression that they are artificial. Well, they are!

Molens
A tulip, a wooden shoe, a dike, and a windmill...that's the way we spell Holland. Yes, we have windmills...would YOU tear down the main attraction of your theme park?

Dijken
Also known as the Dutch Mountains, dikes are what is keeping our feet dry (along with the wooden shoes, of course). And no, we don't know Hans Brinkers...don't believe everything they tell you!

Sinterklaas
The rest of the world has Santaclaus, we have 'Sinterklaas', a guy with a red suit and a white beard (they must be related!). Sinterklaas brings presents on the 5th (!) of December and doesn't have a sleigh, but a white horse and black helpers called 'Zwarte Pieten' (Black Petes). Just like the tulips Sinterklaas originates in Turkey – he was/is a bishop that spends his old age in Spain (so they tell us).

Oliebollen
'Fritters'. Essentially a heavy dough with lots of raisins, deep-fried in lots of oil. To be eaten around New Year's Day: the fattier, the better!

Oranje
Orange (the colour), but also the 'petname' for our national soccer team. The familyname of our Queen is 'van Oranje', a name that goes way back in time, to the days that nobleman William of Orange owned the French town of Orange. If you see people with orange flags, orange wigs and their faces painted orange, then you now there is a major Dutch sports event going on!

Koninginnedag
On April 30 the Dutch celebrate Queens' Day. That is not the Queen's birthday (anymore), but the birthday of the former Queen-Mother of the Netherlands. Whatever shall we do when crown-prince Alexander takes over?

Hagelslag
One of the strangest Dutch habits is to put chocolate 'sprinklets' on your bread. The Dutch have a thing with chocolate: there is also a chocolate paste, that probably was invented when someone left his chocolate sprinkled slice of bread lying in the sun...

Heineken
The Dutch are great merchants. The 'living' proof is Heineken: one way or another one of the worst beers from the Netherlands managed to spread across the globe. If you ever get the chance, try some of the other Dutch or (even better) Belgian beers. Avoid the Microsoft of beers at all costs!

Klagen
Complaining, that is what the Dutch are best at. Complaining about the wheather is the favorite. But complaining about foreigners, traffic jams, dog sh*t and public transport is popular too.

Coffeeshops
Just one clue: they don't really sell coffee here... ;o)=

Vergunningen
The permits: how could I almost have forgotten them?! In the Netherlands you need a permit for almost anything. Should you ever pay us a visit, please check all your permits. Wait a minute, do I have a permit for this?

Tolerantie
Tolerance The Dutch have made up a zillion rules, and most of them are broken all the time. The 'penalty' for this is to be ignored. No one will get in your way, as long as you don't park your car on the wrong spot.

De fiets
The bicycle or bike. There are more bikes than people in the Netherlands. And since there are almost as many cars by now, the bike is arguably the fastest way of transportation in some cities. Don't forget to lock yours, unless you want to be the victim of that other Dutch tradition: bike-steeling.

6 PM - Prakken
Although there are some regional discrepancies, the Dutch tend to have their evening meal at 6 PM. In a lot of homes you can witness the national sport of 'prakken' then. Take a plate with potatoes, add some gravy and veggies, take your fork, and squashing and mixing we go! Some claim it's better than sex....

Pindakaas
Although the Americans have pindakaas (peanut butter), they're in for a shock when they try the Dutch equivalent. Pindakaas tastes quite strong en salty, and I wouldn't recommend making ice cream from it. It tastes more like the 'sateh sauce' that is served in Indonesian and Maleysian restaurants.

Kaasschaaf
Strictly speaking not a Dutch, but a Norwegian invention: the cheese slicer. The perfect way to make the most of that giant Gouda cheese: the thinner the slice, the happier the Dutch wallet.

Aardappelen
Potato, potatoe, yes we do have spuds. In fact: the Netherlands are the number 9 potato growers in the world.

(From the website: www.eddyechternach.nl)

....and you still want to visit the Netherlands? :-) Yeah you should. Naples has the name; First Napels....etc, but it should be HOLLAND!

Hello Hans,
A perfect POV--I love the diagonals with the "point" (or whatever that thing is called) pointing to something just out of our view, leaving it open to our imagination. And the horizon is nicely delineated. A wonderful and positive work of art!
Have fun this week,
Karen

Hoi Hans,
Groeten,
Niek

Hello Hans,

An excellent image has been presented in this fine composition my friend. Your question in the commentary note has added more charm of vision as to feel what could be accross the horrizon..... shooting against the light is providing a hopeful sentiment in the perspective. A excellent thoughtful image my friend. Well done.

Thanks for sharing this image.

Why, there is nothing beyond the horizon! The earth is flat!! Haven't you heard?...hee hee....so don't sail out there too far!! A marvelous shot here Hans! So lucky you are to sail on this beauty. Did you take your Dramamine with you??

What interesting notes, Hans. I had a friend who used to bring the liquorice back from Holland for me. Now we can buy it here. It is called salt liquorice. Delicious!

I love this! The shot has been perfectly cropped so that the geometric shapes fit into the shot like a well constructed jigsaw!

Lovely composition and soft colours.

Kind regards,
bev :-)

TFS

Hello Hansie,
Us here in a new aspect of Holland, and your notes are fantastic and interesting.
Great action moment, one would hear almost the floods striking this ship at good speed, all sails inflated and making flap with the wind, the spray whipping the face. The shades are splendid skilfully opposite at the zones of lights.
TFS, good night.

Just beautiful, Hans. It has a real sense of "being there," of being part of a voyage. Metering and saturation are excellent, excellent depth of field also.
Nice work

Great pic Hans! When I was a boy, this is how I've seen it in my minds eye (living in a landlocked country). There are quite a few dutchmen in our neck of the woods, so I am familiar with a lot of the stuff in your note.

Hi Hans,
Just a gentle breeze on the starboard side, must have been a delightful sail that day.
Beautiful lighting through the sails.
Nice image,
Pete.

Hi Hans,

Haha, great introduction to the Netherlands you give in your note.
When it comes to the beer, please try the beers of the South of the Netherlands and especially Limburg, being the best preserved secret ;-). The landscape is more attrachtive there, the people very friendly, the food tasty and the beers the finest of the Netherlands. Try Gulpener and also Brand Beer. Another fine beer is Wieckse Witte. Which is a white-beer from the area where I was born. I'm actually baptized in the church built against the brewery at the side of the River Maas.

Just a list of beers to try - I grew up in Limburg, so I know my beers ;-):

Gulpener Dort, 6.5% - brewed since 1953;
Brand Dubbelbock, 7.5% - brewed since 1987;
Hertog Jan Pilsener, 5%;
Janneke (like Palm, brewed by Hertog Jan), 5.4%;

Wieckse Witte is actually not a Limburg beer anymore. Ridder brewery on the banks of the Maas closed in 2003 and the last beer in production - Wieckse Witte - moved to Den Bosch. What a pity. This was a decision by the main shareholder Heineken. Yes, another reason to NOT drink Heineken; they close all good breweries.
Right now, Brewery de Keyzer is using the old brewery to make some very exclusive beers. Go to Grand Hotel de l'Empereur to get the specially brewed 'Empereurke'. Another wonderful beer they still do is 'Double Saison'. Difficult to get outside of Limburg, but you will find it in Maastricht. It's brewed since 1881 and 6.5%.
Also try the Leeuw pilsener - coming from Valkenburg. I don't like it, but perhaps you do.

Some Limburg beer culture. Hope the note did not make your thirsty ;-).

Groet! Dennis

Hi Hans,
