The Batavia was build in Amsterdam in 1628 to be the pride of the VOC(Dutch East India Company).
In October 1628 it left the harbour of Texel for her first business-journey
to Indonesia, the beginning of a disaster...
June 1629 the boat shipwrecked on a reef near the coast of Western Australia, never reaching her target,
the Indonesian Island Java.
On top of that an extremely bloody munity and massacre
took place among the survivors.

Between 1985 and 1995 master-shipbuilder Willem Vis
and a group of unemployed youngsters did the rebuilding of this replica on the Batavia werf(wharf)
in Lelystad.

Golden light for a reminding of a golden century, that's wonderful.

Thanks for the note, too.

Bella panorámica amigo,
impresionante barco,
con hermoso pov y foco.
saludos Jan.

Beautiful colors and warm light, excellent compo.

Great shot Jan... Lighting is superb!

I'm familiar wih the Batavia story, so it's very interesting to see what the ship really looked like.

If you haven't read it already I can recommend "The Company" by Arrabella Edge. It's a novel set around wreck of the Batavia, from the point of view the survivors. Fiction, but very evocative of the horror of the true story.

Excellent shot Jan.

Very good composition and details, and the brilliant golden glow of the later afternoon sun lends itself to the woodwork of the ship.

Beautiful colouration of the ship itself.
I really like the fact there are a couple of seagulls up there too, adding to the reality of the shot.
Excellent work,

Well done

Martin

Hello Jan,

I see your getting on quite well! This is really great!
A real present for a boat lover like myself. The composition is simply perfect and so is the light which makes this photo a jewel. I cannot help but admire and enjoy it.
Well done my friend!

Presently I'm off, far from home, living on board of my sailing boat and doing small daily trips along the coast of Sardinia, so I stopped my activity here in TL and TE, however once in a while I'll pay a short visit...

Ciao,
Donato

Die jongens hebben er weer wat moois van gemaakt.

Olá Jan

Uma foto espetacular pela sua composição,
luz, cores e nitidez. Amei!
Parabéns por tão belo trabalho.
Grande abraço,
Vera.

Magnificent ship and a most impressive capture. I've always understood that one mark of a good photographer is being prepared to wait until conditions are right for the best shot.

With that mirror-calm water and the golden sun coming in at just the right angle, you have timed this perfectly and the result is outstanding.

Amazing - floating history! I like the late afternoon light in this one, makes it visually attractive as well as documentary.

Hi jan

I've never been to the shipwreck coast of Western Australia, but have read of the horror story of the Wreck of the Batavia, & the evil Cornelius, & heroic Hayes. It would make a great Hollywood movie. Tfs!
