Wind...

Sailing on the Markermeer this beautiful small Vollenhovense Bol (Thanks John T) is heading home to Muiden to shelter for the oncoming storm. It already fights against the raging wind from the south west.It has been a beautiful day but in the early afternoon the sky became grey and cloudy and the wind became powerful. When I took this shot it just started to rain.

Took this picture from the Markerdijk in the east direction, with 10x zoom and 1.5 x digital zoom. Left on purpose picture noisy.

The Markermeer ("Lake Marken") is a 700 km˛ lake in the central Netherlands in between North Holland, Flevoland and its larger sibling, the IJsselmeer. A shallow lake at some 3 to 4 m in depth, it is named after the small former island, now peninsula, of Marken that lies within it.
The Markermeer was not originally intended to remain a lake. It used to be part of the Zuiderzee, a salt water inlet of the North Sea, that was dammed off by the Afsluitdijk (Closure Dike) in 1932, turning the Zuiderzee into the fresh water IJsselmeer. The following years saw the reclamation of extensive tracts of land as large polders in a massive project known as the Zuiderzee Works (this article has a map of the area). One of these, the Markerwaard, was to occupy the area of the current Markermeer. Part of the construction of this last polder was building the Houtribdijk, also called Markerwaarddijk, finished in 1976, which hydrologically splits the IJsselmeer in two, the southern section being the Markermeer.
Because of changing priorities and doubts about the financial feasibility, the Markerwaard was indefinitely postponed in the 1980s and the Markermeer has since begun to become a valuable ecological and recreational asset of its own.
The Markermeer is used as a freshwater reservoir and a buffer against flood waters and droughts. In 2003 Holland was hit by drought, and several peat dikes were endangered or even collapsed. The Dutch reversed water flows in the Amsterdam area, so that water from the Markermeer helped to wet the endangered areas. (Text Wikipedia.com)

Hello Hans,
Great view of sailing and the wind. Personally, I like the picture NOISY as it adds that element of roughness on the water. TFS Julie

Hi Hans,
One may imagine the weather : rainy, and rough wind, as your note precises. Beautiful shot of a sailingboat.
Mary

Hans
Groet

John

Hi Hans,

Speaking of sharp and focus, here’s an image that can use some. The excessive noise doesn't really help in demonstrating the great wind and the out of focus neither. I gather that you had to crop it in post production and loosing a lot of definition. However your subject is well positioned.

Cheers!

Ben.

Hoi Hans,

Een mooie shot. Ik geloof zowaar dat ik ditzelfde schip een aantal jaar geleden onder dezelfde omstandigheden op het gooimeer heb gefotografeerd. Ik ga eens graven in mijn archief...
Groet,

Paul

Hello Hans
I was immediately gripped by this lovely shot. It has a immediate emotional appeal. The composition is good, the background is ideal. The detail on the boat points up the dourness that surrounds........I'm with them, hoping they make it!

Hi Hans,
Like the frame and the title.
This is a very interesting work.
Regards,
GRACE
