Castle De Schaffelaar

This is the castle situated in Barneveld were the Balloon Fiësta was held last weekend. Well you just can see the farmers wife is chasing the cows for their evening lunch. It is a typical part of the Netherlands, so to the TL-visitors Vandana and Vassilis, this is what you can expect on your Tour de Holland :-)

Regarding the name of the castle: Jan de Schaffelaar was a famous knight in Holland who lived in the 15th century in Holland and committed suicide by jumping from the church tower of Barneveld. See story below.

BTW I’m leaving for a (very)short brake and join my colleagues to go sailing on the IJsselmeer (IJssel lake) so I will answer your critiques a bit late and will not critique myself today until tomorrow evening. Hopefully to make some nice pictures during my sail event.

Sorry for the late replies folks, have a great day!

Jan van Schaffelaar

Jan van Schaffelaar was a cavalry officer working for David of Burgundy, the Bishop of Utrecht during the Hook and Cod wars. He was probably born in the region of Barneveld.
Historical significance

The church Jan van Schaffelaar jumped off, as it is today. Van Schaffelaar's monument can be seen slightly left of the church. The oldest written description of Van Schaffelaar's actions is found in a chronicle from 1698 by the historian Antonius Matthaeus of Utrecht.

According to this chronicle, on July 16, 1482, Hook troops from castle Rosendael near Arnhem under the command of Jan van Schaffelaar got into conflict with Cod troops from Amersfoort and Nijkerk. The troops from Rosendael captured the church and tower of the village of Barneveld, but they were shot at with cannons, killing four or five. After negotiations, their opponents stated that they would accept their surrender only if the defenders would throw their commander from the tower. The men were unwilling to do so, but Van Schaffelaar stated that he would have to die some day and that he did not want to cause his men trouble. Having said this, he put his hands to his sides and jumped off the tower. Despite the great height of the tower he was not immediately killed, but was finished off by his enemies.

Other versions expand on this account by stating that the troops under Van Schaffelaar were promised safe passage from the tower. In some versions, the demand was that Van Schaffelaar be turned in. Van Schaffelaar surprised his opponents by turning himself in in such a way that he would not be alive for long.

When the church was restored in 1978, remains were found that suggest that Van Schaffelaar was shot after his fall, causing a pin from his visor to enter his skull. He died because of internal bleeding caused by his fall or a blow from a weapon. He was initially buried in a mass grave near the tower and later transferred to the family grave of the Hackfort family in the choir of the church.

Recognition
Jan van Schaffelaar became a minor Dutch hero. He features in several novels and poems, De Schaapherder by J.F. Oltmans being one of the better known ones.
On September 15, 1903 among great festivities, a statue was erected in his honour near the tower that he jumped from.

Name
According to some sources Jan van Schaffelaar's name was actually Jan van Domselaar. He acquired his better known name through his marriage.
Jan van Schaffelaar is sometimes written as Jan van Schaffelaer or Jan van Scaffelaer (archaic). (Text Wikipedia.com)

Hello Hans,
Although I don't critique/comment on your photos frequently, I always enjoy looking at them. The compositions are always well planned, the tech quality of the images are topnotch, and the Notes are always well written and informative. Just like this one. Better than a postcard. The cows on the foreground add to the wholesomeness of the well defined castle. Best wishes - Danilo

Hello Hans,

This is a fantstic view of a rural life my friend. Natural tones in the day light illumination are marvellous. Selection of view point if smart. Excellent image, well done.

Many thanks for sharing this image.

So you finally bought a mall house???? Or is that a typical farm house in Holland????
Excellent capture. Excellent sharpness and details.

When in the chicken city, there is more to see then chicken's - you can also find a golden egg somewhere in the outskirts....
But a beautiful castle will also do - great light - great details and again a beautiful part of Holland shown.

Nobody can ever beat your notes.

Hi Hans,
Compo, belichting, scherpte, etc pikobello in orde.
groeten,
Joop!

Hoi Hans,
Groeten,
Niek

very nice shot GB!!! TFS

Hi Hans,

Great shot with a beautiful sky and some cows in the foreground adding a bit of dynamic. And as always a great note! What's the person doing there in the middle of the cows? Just wondering about that one!

Greetings, Dennis
