[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I've decided to follow up on the advise Karan gave me. She wrote that I needed to do more of these memories photos from some of the countries I visited. With my first memories photos I wrote that when I visited a country, I try buy/get something that is unique for that area.

This is a small Maya mask that I bought in a small shop in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. At first I was looking for a larger mask, but then figured that those were really expensive and hard to take with you when backpacking. This one was more suitable for the wallet and the backpack.

The mask is called Teotibuacama Mimi Mimi

The Maya peoples constitute a diverse range of the Native American peoples of southern Mexico and northern Central America. The overarching term "Maya" is a convenient collective designation to include the peoples of the region who share some degree of cultural and linguistic heritage; however the term embraces many distinct populations, societies and ethnic groups who each have their own particular traditions, cultures and historical identity.

There are an estimated 6 million Maya living in this area at the start of the 21st century. Some are quite integrated into the modern cultures of the nations in which they reside, others continue a more traditional culturally distinct life, often speaking one of the Mayan languages as a primary language.

The largest populations of contemporary Maya are in the Mexican states of Yucatán, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, and Chiapas, and in the Central American countries of Belize, Guatemala, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador.

Tech talk: This time not taken with my carboard box studio, but by using a black piece of paper and a diffused flashlight. Shot in RAW, converted to JPEG after changing the white balance to thungsten. Levels, and Curves, saturation on yellow, crop and clone. Framed, rezised and USM

Excellent way to show off this mask, Niek. Looks as though it's being displayed in a museum. There appears to be some kind of dried vegetable matter in the hotspot on top? I wonder if you put that there for effect. It helps give texture to the light, though, to be extremely picky, maybe those fibers should be more in focus? But no complaints. It's a dramatic shot. Thanks for the good info on the Maya -- a fascinating culture. (Don't know if you've been back to Playa in the past few years, but it's changed beyond recognition.) Best, Hugh

I also take something with me back when I travel to another place. That is a nice idea to present your memories.
I like the way the light illumintaes the forehead, and as if the chin blends with the support below. Good choice of the thin white line in the frame.

Interesting theme here. I like the moodiness of this image. The photo is just light enough to still see the mouth opening but dark enough to fade to total black at the bottom with one great specular highlight at the top,I like that! I know it takes alot of skill to capture this without screwing it up. Very well done.

I thoght this was a museum piece! this looks wonderful. The museum effect is caused by the nice lighting and dark BG. Excellent object and great note.
