Scary silhouette...

Boy I’ve got a freighting experience yesterday ;) After a great day in Enschede and Bentheim (Germany) with my brother Arie and a meeting with Janneke (Jan), I went with Janneke, Gert and their son Matthias, to the world famous “Easter Fire” in Boekelo of all places. Except from Janneke and her family, Marcel (Mas) and Mariët (Darlene) were also present. So we had a kind of a Easternight TL-party in Boekelo. In the WS you find a picture of all four Twente TL-members.

Easter Fire? You would ask, yes this fire is in the county were I was born (Twente) a tradition. In earlier times all the unnecessary rubbish from the long winter, all the trees, branches and other rubbish left from the dark period was burned. This tradition is still common in Twente en de Achterhoek, the east side of the Netherlands, except from farmers burning there winter waste, nowadays it is the youth gathering everything (il)legal what will burn to make a pile as big and high as possible for the Easter Fire which is set on fire just after sunset of the Easter Sunday.

In this shot the pile of (mainly) wood is burning fiercely and somehow a madcap is jumping around the fire. After investigation it appeared to be Janneke, Doing a ritual tribal Tukker Dance around the fire or dancing around trying to warm here freezing body. So tradition is held in honour and I had a great evening with TL-fellows, Janneke, Marcel and Mariët (and also a few hundred other Tukkers).

I remember my mother talking about these from her childhood -- in Schleswig-Holstein! There's another fire ceremony too, (I think in the middle of summer (??)
This capture is quite superb! Scary (only a little) and exciting!
Great capture under difficult conditions too
TFS

naaaaa.. just teasing... Sorry Mas, Darlene and Jan! Just teasing!

I'm glad that you had a great weekend there with them.
I realy like this warming picture, oh Great Green One, nice details there and a nice glow!

Cheers!
Anneke

paasvuur, kwam uit Groningen op weg naar huis en het zag blauw van de rook, een gezelligheid om de vuren heen, geweldig. Jij hebt dit mooi weergegeven! groet Joke

Only Mr. GreenBaron could produce an outstanding image such as this:)
What I like here is the catching of the fater blaze and smoke & splinters with right shutter speed. That will be hard for me, but you have done so well on it. (1/40th).
I am also impressed that you seem to know so mant TL members personally:)
Thanks for the notes as well, Hans!

Hi Hans,

Sounds a bit like what happens here on November 5th... Some very large bonfires lit then, with some very odd things burned!

This is a perfect capture of the fire. It can't have been easy to get this with so many people around. The silhouette is very effective.

I went to a performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring a few days ago, and this image conjours up memories of the sounds of that work, bringing pagan ritual to life.

A great shot, thank you!

Nigel

Excellent shot my dear friend... i like it so much... great capture in the right momment... and the note is just perfect with this... congratulations... TFS...

Hi Hans:
I found this rather remarkable & at the same time VERY creepy! Am I the only one who sees the ghostly, firey image of a man with short dark hair, wearing a suit & tie right at the apex of the flames? It looks like he is made of fire, his head, shoulders, collar & tie are quite obvious, even his ear, eyes, nose & mouth are visible; I can even make out the top button on his suit! And I don't mean the person in silhouette. I don't know, but it certainly looks like you've captured a lot more than you thought you did with this photo. This really does look like a firey ghost photo to me more than anything else. VERY interesting, maybe it's a trick of the light, maybe it's something else; but it's definately weird. Regards, Erik.

Strong and a dramatic nocturnal composition. Silhouette of a human (Janneke) is looking interesting. Warm tones of blazzon is an excellent capture. Well done my friend.

Thanks for sharing this image.

Hello Hans!
Wow this looks more like Halloween then Easter! Thats a really interesting tradition. Great shot with the scary silhoette against the fire. TFS

No... It's not scary... Not at all...
The funny thing is that just yesterday night i imagined it would be good at this moment to be lost in the middle of a large forest with a big camp fire :)
So i see it...
The size satisfy me... Thank You!
I'm sure the silhouettes have fun!
