Sweety's Butterfly

After my visit of the Amsterdam Zoo Artis, I posted two pictures of the 'big cats', knowing Sweety suffers from cat phobia. To compensate this I promised here to post an other animal picture from the Artis Zoo.

In that Zoo there is a nice butterfly garden, were hundreds of the most beautiful and colourful were flying. So Anneke and I went on butterfly hunt. Well I can assure you that's easier said than done. My respect increased for the TL butterfly specialists like Silvio2000, Lilycat and ofcourse Kokos101.

Boy I looks easy to catch a butterfly, but looking closely to my images more than 90% wasn't sharp. So I chose this one, not that it's a perfect one but I have to make my promises true :-)

Any tips on butterfly 'shooting' are most welcome!

PP work:

Shot in RAW. Cropped, increased contrast and saturation (minor). Adjusted midtones. Converted to JPEG. Sharpened, add frame and text.

Shot with the Sigma 70-300 macro lens with focal length of 240 and in macro selection.

Goede morgen Hans.
Not bad atall. Did you use 'spot' metering ? Always try to focus on the head. With al smaller aperture the sharpness will ingrease too. Af course, dont need to tell you.
I'm very glad my Olympus having steady shot, but pictures like this you needs luck alwell.
The frame colours suits the picture excellent.

Hi Hans, understand that it isn't easy to shoot flying creature especially butterfly or dragonfly, it needs our patience and passion. I would use high speed to shoot them, around 1/1000 or even at 1/2000 to avoid camera shaky or blur images as they will be moving very quickly. By the way nice shot and the flower is the same as in my garden, I think it is everywhere around the world and I often notice that butterflies do like this flower a lot. Regards, ari

Beautiful colours and composition, and as you already know the details aren't as sharp as they could be - focal point seems to be the buds in front of the butterfly. Still an eyecatching picture.
Thanks for sharing

I love the colors and your composition on this one. Well captured. Indeed you are an artist ! Interesting gallery as well. I'm a little bit disturbed with the framing though.

Hello Hans!
Great composition for Sweety!
Beautiful butterfly and excellent colours!
Lovely capture!
Best regards!

...I return... :)

My favorite way of shooting butterflies is to get down on their level. I sit IN the path of flowers and just be still and wait....and watch for snakes! This is very nice Hans! he posed for you nicely. On my end the colors are way too strong, the reds are blasted out..I have to check my settings again! ARG!!
Nice shot!
B-)
Linda

Kleuren, compositie, scherpte, ... allemaal heel mooi Hans,
behalve de scherptediepte.
Die had, voor mij, groter mogen wezen : de bloem waarop de vlinder zit, de pootjes en het achterlijf beginnen al te
vervagen en laat dit nu net het " zwaartepunt " van je
foto wezen.
Gewoon mijn idee hé Hans !

Groetjes
Jan

Hello Hans,
A splendid close-up picture this. The colours are beautiful and so is the lighting, and everything is nice and sharp where it should be.
Well done!

hi hans, awesome shot, great colors and composition, nice work!

Good morning Hans,

Now that is a sweet thing to do for Sweety!

And indeed this one is 90% perfect - the other 10% - maybe shorter shuttertime? How is it that you can use the macro option with focal length 240, I thought you can only use that on 300?
O ja - tips - soms gewoon je pocket camera gebruiken - nee echt, serieus, als je er dichtbij genoeg kan komen kan je de macro of super macro functie gebruiken.......

TFS this sweet picture.

Els

Hello, toujours Cockie
After the force, here the delicacy of a butterfly. But always also beautiful even if it's not the same type of animal. The colors are sparkling and the incredible details on butterfly, cheer my friend, it's still and always very beautiful work, congratulations.
Bises

Ja, hiermee heb je het wel weer goedgemaakt bij Sweety. Erg mooie plaat met mooie kleuren. Bijpassend frame. NOG scherper moet een vlinder niet zijn, want ze zien er in het echt ook niet scherp uit. :-)
groeten,
Joop!

Hi Hans,

Color and composition look nice. If I want to be really picky I could complain about the red parts of the flower that leave the frame. It would be nicer to clone these bits out and have only green leaving the frame. (funny how I now start to notice these things with other people's shots, next step is to also apply it to my own :))

So as a painting it looks fine. However as a macro shot of a butterfly it does not have enough details (sharpness). About tips, it would be helpful to leave the exif information in the image. You were probably using flash already, in which case you can just as well stop down the lens a little more for more DOF.

It could also very well be that this is simply a limitation of the lens you are using.

TFS,
Pedro
