Marken
The turbulent waters of the Zuider Zee were once busy with Dutch trading ships plying to and from the Baltic. This Baltic trade was the linchpin of Holland's prosperity in the Golden Age, revolving around the import of huge quantities of grain, the supply of which was municipally controlled to guarantee against famine. The business was immensely profitable and its proceeds built a string of prosperous seaports – including Volendam, Hoorn and Enkhuizen – and nourished market towns like Edam, while the Zuider Zee itself supported numerous fishing villages such as Marken. In the eighteenth century the Baltic trade declined, a process accelerated by the silting up of the Zuider Zee harbours, and the ports were left high and dry economically. Conseqently, with the rapid increase in the Dutch population during the nineteenth century, plans were made to reclaim the Zuider Zee and turn it into farmland. The first part of the scheme was the completion of a dam, the Afsluitdijk, across the mouth of the Zuider Zee in 1932, but by the time a second, complementary barrier linking Enkhuizen with Lelystad was finished in 1976, the steam had gone out of the project. The old Zuider Zee was never completely drained and most has remained water, with the two dams creating a pair of freshwater lakes – the Markermeer and IJsselmeer.
These placid, steel-grey lakes are popular with day-tripping Amsterdammers, who come here in their droves to sail boats and visit a string of pretty little towns and villages. These begin on the coast just a few kilometres north of Amsterdam with the picturesque old fishing village of Marken and the former seaport of Volendam. In the summer it's possible to travel between these two by boat, but the trip can also be made – if a little less conveniently – by bus via Monnickendam. Buses also link Volendam with Edam, a far prettier proposition and much less touristy. You don't necessarily need to make a choice though, since all three places can comfortably be visited in a day.

Hi Ruud
Very pretty image of a "typical" village. I love the detail and the colours in the sky are amazing.

Hi Ruud,
Very nice photo! The polarising filter works well here! Splendid sky and vivid colors! I like this composition with good lead-in lines from bridge towards the church. Informative note too! Bravo! Annie

Die "Maxima" brug is typisch

Nederlands en wel een mooie techniek. De kerk met die blauwe
lucht staat er mooi bij

Hi Ruud,
Very vivid tones here. Very nice compo: I expecially like the way the lines of the white bridge direct the eyes directly to the curch. And handsome dutch village scene.
Thank for making me remember your beautiful country, where I lived for one year1

Dario

LOL... I really have to laugh my friend, you visited and pictured lots of places (and better than I did) which I visited, pictured and posted to TL too :) So like this one great colourful picture of Marken. Look at this photo posted months ago almost taken from the same spot near the Maxima bridge in Marken. You win! Perfect capture!

Informative note to go with this great composition. Nice post processing done here! I like the pov with the bridge and path in a gentle diagonal curve leading up to the church.
Cheers

Just food for thought ;o)).
