Engelmunduskerk…

This church (the Engelmundus church) is situated in the small village of Velsen near the North Sea Canal which I visited a few weeks ago.

Here I made my “penance” a day after sinning on TL (I spoiled on a terrible way my frame and posted a too grainy picture, so visiting the house of the lord will teach me.) but with my pink flamboyant posting of yesterday I have to think about an atonement again ;). That’s way I posted now the whole church which is absolutely worthy to be photographed, such a nice moody church.

The foundation of this church was laid in 722. For our historical Yankees barbarians this is about 1285 year ago so you can only dream about such ancient history :) During its life this church is several times destroyed and rebuild. The shape of the main building is from 1773 and the bell tower is dated 1818 so that’s relatively young. Two weeks ago I posted this tower with crows on TL.

The church is still in use by a Christian community. Hope you enjoy this picture, so let me know what you think!

PS-talk; only cropped and framed. That’s all!

Church

The word church is frequently used to describe a building used for prayer, worship, or other public religious services, usually referring specifically to those for Christian worship.
The first Christians were, like Jesus, Jews resident in Israel who worshiped on occasion in the Temple in Jerusalem and weekly in local synagogues. Temple worship was a ritual involving sacrifice, occasionally including the sacrifice of animals in atonement for sin, offered to Yahweh until Jesus became the final sacrificial offering on Calvary. The New Testament includes many references to Jesus visiting the Temple, the first time as an infant with his parents.

The early history of the synagogue is obscure, but it seems to be an institution developed for public Jewish worship during the Babylonian captivity when the Jews did not have access to the Jerusalem Temple for ritual sacrifice. Instead, they developed a daily and weekly service of readings from the Torah or the prophets followed by commentary. This could be carried out in a house if the attendance was small enough, and in many towns of the Diaspora that was the case. In others, more elaborate architectural settings developed, sometimes by converting a house and sometimes by converting a previously public building. The minimum requirements seem to have been a meeting room with adequate seating, a case for the Torah scrolls, and a raised platform for the reader and preacher. (Text Wikipedia.com)

like the composition and framing

Hello Hans,
Can you pronounce that for us? Really nice composition-- the church, the fg branches, right down to the smoke coming out of the chimney. Excellent lighting and clarity. TFS Julie

Hello Hans

A crisp/clear/clear shot with much interest in the natural light enhancing the red brickwork. The natural branches of the trees adds much as a framing to a fine upstanding building. The off-set angle also gives much depth and allows the eye to roam with ease. Welldone, a perfect shot to please.

Nice shot. Very sharp and clear.
Hope you got double the penance for all the fooling around you do with them two gals :-).
And as for the history, if your ancestors had stopped looking at their belly buttons long enough to look and explore around, we might have had more history with them guys discovering the land and settling in sooner :-).

Hi Hans, I love the notes. An excellent image, well composed and delightful colour and light. When next you pay your penance I would suggest you pay another for leaving those two small twigs at the bottom :). Well done my froend and TFS,
David

Many thanks for your comment on ‘Mili Mili and Fog’

Hoi Hans,

Hans, mooie opname . Op en top Holland. Goede lead in met bomen. Groet

Hi Hans,

What do I think? I think this looks great, but it reminds me of so much. I grew up in a small farm community in South Africa, and we lived about ten minutes from my school/church/friends... everything was a bike ride away, except we never went bike riding that far... too dangerous. Anyways, our church was built quite similarly... a mixture of red brick and earthy rocks... same roofing, I still remember the church bell- we'd always hear it from the car, we were always late! :) Ah but, that was long ago..

Great angle here, the green grass adds a lovely touch to the image... fertile like the faithful souls that gather there. :) I like the trees surrounding the sky, adds a bit of distraction. You got good focusing here, and the church itself is a very amiable model/focal point. Good framing and over all, just a striking piece of work/note. TFS!

Biance.
