Moulting Snowy

Took this image of the snowy owl at the Amsterdam Artis Zoo. It's clearly seen the owl is moulting from full white winter feather suit to the summer suit :-) The fluffy white feathers makes the body of the owl appear a bit blurry. Did quite some PP work on it. See below. Nevertheless I tried to make the owl look as natural as possible in it's capture.

PP work:
Shot in RAW. Adjusted brightness and contrast slightly. Converted to JPEG. Selected owl and inverted selection. Blurred background with Gaussian blur 17%. Selected eyes and increased saturation (20%) and yellow tones. Increased contrast of the black eye pupil so the centre becomes darker. Cropped, resized and sharpened. Add frame and text.

Taken with the 70-300mm Sigma lens, focal lenght 135mm.

Very nice portrait of a snowy, Hans. He almost looks crosseyed :-)

Exposure control given all the white in the shot really is excellent, some great texture variation on the feathers.

My only comments - there's a white glow to the right side of his head, like a halo...wassat?

Great idea on selecting the eyes and increasing saturation - I think that works well. Being a pp-idiot, something I would never have thought of doing, so thanks for the tip :-)

Nice shot and note, Big Fella.

Excellent bird portrait. I agree with out kilted friend's comments, the PP work is visible here and there at closer look.

Tibi

Great details Hans.

Bonjour mon ami,
good DOF with dark colors that highlights your topic winged.
Superb portrait of this owl, quality rendering of plumage is beautiful, she seems to have a great couturier dress, vaporous and delicate.
Ha ha ha! you noticed his eyes, I found him a slight squint
Good sunday for you

Hi Hans, this is a first class portrait. Bravo!
Regards Rose

Hi Hans,
This owl looks sleepy ... possibly didn't get a good night sleep :) Well captured and processed with good resulting image quality. Well done! tfs
Cheers,
Renier

Superb shot Hans. As you and Richard have stated, the eyes are the key to this shot. Slight pity about the blurred mesh fence to the right of the shot as, without it, this would have passed for a true 'free' photo.
Excellent work. Paul.

So dear Snowy is moulting. It's a beautiful bird Hans, and you are showing him well, moulting or not. What a cute 'nose' he has too. And those those yellow eyes shine out strongly as well.

Hi Hans,
A superb posting. Details of the feather are exquisite. His yellow eyes are the highlight. Best regards, Danilo

Hi Hans.

Hello Hans,
Nice pp work here to bring all our attention on your subject... Love the expression on the owl. Looks like he is not easily entertained! :)

Hi Hans

Perfect use of a shallow dof, on the owl, with attractive, pastel colours & good fg sharpness. Tfs!

Nice work here Hans! A beautiful animal, but I see you have the opposite problem I had with my "white" animal. There are hot spots on the top of the bird, OE, as Kilted said, levels are SO hard with WHITE animals! It's so hard to shoot white, but he/she is so pretty!! Love the eyes!

17 % GB, that's huge Hans...
Mmm... I've mixed feelings about this one. My first impression was: Wow. But then I looked closer, read your note, and looked again with my loupe ☺^☺.
The work on the owl is spotless, very sharp and the blurry parts are accounted for by the fluffy down it's sheading.
The work on the backdrop is another thing; not only did the huge amount of GB cause a halo around the owl, you also did not respect the "planes of sharpness" by forgetting to treat the left bottom part the same as the top and right parts.
Which, for me, ruin the credibility of the shot. And that's a pity, as those snowy owls are among my favourite birds of prey.

Hi Hans,
This is a great shot of the Snowy Owl, the exposure control on the white feathers is spot on, the eyes are hypnotic and draw the eye straight to them, there is a glow down the right side of the Owl that I think was maybe due to the Sharpenning or the application of Gausian blur to the background, other than that though it's perfect.
Well done
Regards Andy

Hi Hans
The bird of Goddess Athina, sign of wisdoom has been greatly captured and pp'ed artistically. Very good details and bright colors

Lovely detail on the bird itself Hans and good colour. Like others I feel the background lets you down on this one, not only the halo but the inconsistency of sharpness. TFS,
David

I like contrast between dark green backround and white snowy owl.

Lovley , Mr. GB. The whites are exquisitely captured and the pp work on the eyes is perfect. Sharp detail through the feathers and the framing is a perfect addition, as always. Well done.

HI Hans
Bird of great beauty that you obviously caught well.
Is not the halo around the bird caused by oversharpening, especially if you use unsharp mask with too high a number?
Still looks good.

Nice capture of a majestic looking bird - control of exposure to keep the whites and blacks sharp is superb. Halo from the PP work is a little distracting, but still an eye catching picture
Thanks for sharing
