Eurasian Coot or Black Coot ( Fulica atra )

The Coot breeds across much of the Old World on freshwater lakes and ponds. It occurs and breeds in Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. The species has recently expanded its range into New Zealand. It is resident in the milder parts of its range, but migrates further south and west from much of Asia in winter as the waters freeze.

The Coot is 36–42 cm long, and is largely black except for the white facial shield (which gave rise to the phrase "as bald as a coot", which the Oxford English Dictionary cites in use as early as 1430). As a swimming species, the Coot has partial webbing on its long strong toes.

For the uninitiated, the word “coot” calls to mind nothing more than doddering old codgers and curmudgeons. Nature lovers, on the other hand, are privy to an entirely new complement of coots, a collection of charming charcoal wading birds found throughout most of the world.

Hi Tsilla,

The shot could have been a great one.
Natural moment iscaptured with nice colors, and autumn plays a great role here but...it is pity that there is a huge softness in many parts of this shot, and it seems the camera had been moved while the shot was taken...but never mind, as "there is always next time" :)
