Along the river Rhine

Here an panoramic view of the river Rhine at Alphen aan den Rijn which means Alphen upon Rhine. This is here what is named the “Oude Rijn” whichj means “The Old Rhine”, the most north and western part of the original Rhine river ending up at Katwijk in the North sea.

A city for me with very mixed feelings. The city were my parents were born, were my roots are. A city which I left five years ago with a deeply grieved heart. A city with happy and depressing memories for me…

And here it shows a part of it’s glory, the river were my grandfather made his living by making wooden shoes and having a small business as ferry shipper.

Well I took this picture while making a boat trip with my fellow TL-fellahs JohnT, Vandana, Vassilis and Tanya and my dear Els a.k.a. Henkie with her Ad (Not Add :-) See also my WS were Henkie is showing here photo-gear.

Well I never could have imagine to show ever a ‘bright’ image of the city of my roots: Alphen aan den Rijn.

Rhine river

The Rhine (German: Rhein; Dutch: Rijn; French: Rhin; Italian: Reno; Romansh: Rain; Slovenian: Ren; Romanian: Rin; Portuguese: Reno; Latin: Rhenus) is one of the longest and most important rivers in Europe at 1,320 kilometres (820 miles), with an average discharge of more than 2,000 cubic meters per second. The most important tributary is the Aare river. The name of the Rhine comes from the archaic German Rhine, which in turn comes from Middle High German: Rin, from the Proto-Indo-European root *reie- ("to flow, run")[1], through the Celtic language. The Reno River in Italy shares the same etymology.

The Rhine and the Danube formed most of the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, and since those days the Rhine has been a vital navigable waterway, carrying trade and goods deep inland. It has also served as a defensive feature, and been the basis for regional and international borders. The many castles and prehistoric fortifications along the Rhine testify to its importance as a waterway. River traffic could be stopped at these locations, usually for the purpose of collecting tolls, by the state controlling that portion of the river.
Netherlands

The Rhine then turns west and enters the Netherlands, where together with the rivers Meuse and Scheldt it forms the extensive Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta, one of the larger river deltas in western Europe. Crossing the border into the Netherlands at Spijk, close to Nijmegen and Arnhem the Rhine is at its widest, but the river then splits into three main distributaries: the Waal, Nederrijn ("Lower Rhine") and IJssel branches.

From here the situation becomes more complicated, as the Dutch name "Rijn" no longer coincides with the main flow of water. Most of the Rhine water (two thirds) flows farther west through the Waal and then via the Merwede and Nieuwe Merwede (Biesbosch) and, merging with the Meuse, through the Hollands Diep and Haringvliet estuaries into the North Sea. The Beneden Merwede branches off near Hardinxveld-Giessendam and continues as the Noord, to join the Lek near the village of Kinderdijk to form the Nieuwe Maas, then flows past Rotterdam and continues via Het Scheur and the Nieuwe Waterweg to the North Sea. The Oude Maas branches off near Dordrecht, farther down rejoining the Nieuwe Maas to form Het Scheur.

The other third portion of the water flows through the Pannerdens Kanaal and redistributes in the IJssel and Nederrijn. The IJssel branch carries one ninth of the water volume north into the IJsselmeer (a former bay), while the Nederrijn flows west parallel to the Waal and carries approximately two ninths of the flow. However, at Wijk bij Duurstede the Nederrijn changes its name and becomes the Lek. It flows farther west to rejoin the Noord into the Nieuwe Maas and to the North Sea.

The name "Rijn" from here on is used only for smaller streams farther to the north which together once formed the main river Rhine in Roman times. Though they retained the name, these streams do not carry water from the Rhine anymore, but are used for draining the surrounding land and polders. From Wijk bij Duurstede, the old north branch of the Rhine is called Kromme Rijn ("Crooked Rhine") and past Utrecht, first Leidse Rijn ("Rhine of Leiden") and then Oude Rijn ("Old Rhine"). The latter flows west into a sluice at Katwijk, where its waters can be discharged into the North Sea. This branch once formed the line along which the Upper Germanic limes were built. Hi Hans,

Lovely shot! The angle of composition gives the photo a dynamic visual impact, DOF, sharpness and colors are excellent. Presentation , as usual, great!
TFS,
Vassilis

Hallo Hans.

A nice overview of the city, but by no means a panoramic image, Hans... wrong aspect ratio ;o). I like the space in this shot. But I think the ws would make a terrific post by itself - Els is a beautiful model and Alphen can't compete with her!
Anyway, TFS... the saga continues.

Hoi Hans, dit keer vind ik de compo.wat gewoontjes voor jouw doen, maar alles wordt weer goed gemaakt door de puurheid van de kleur en scherpte,je frame en lettertype zijn gewoon super.

Hello Hans:)
It is nice there:))) - I'm surprise about water level - it look pretty high, so residents are concern probably to watch the river for any flooding eventualities...
