BINNENHOF VON HOFVIJVER

The Binnenhof, is a complex of buildings in The Hague. It has been the location of meetings of the Staten-Generaal, the Dutch parliament, since 1446, and has been the centre of Dutch politics for many centuries.

The grounds on which the Binnenhof now stands were purchased by Count Floris IV of Holland in 1229, where he built his mansion, next to the little lake that has been called Hofvijver or 'Court Pond' since the 13th century. More buildings were constructed around the court, several of which are well known in their own right, such as the Ridderzaal, where the queen holds her annual speech at Prinsjesdag. One of the towers, simply known as het Torentje ('the Little Tower'; directly next to the Mauritshuis museum) has been the office of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands since 1982.

This 'Inner Court' is studded with monumental old buildings testifying of eight centuries of governing in the Low Countries, but it also has several ample open spaces, all freely open to the public. A gilt neogothic fountain adorns the main square and one of the few Dutch equestrian statues (of King William II) guards the main Stadtholder's Gate, that dates from around 1600.

A large modern building at the south side of the Binnenhof since 1992 houses the House of Representatives, the lower but more important of the Dutch democratically elected Houses of parliamennt.

The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, with a population of 485,818 (as of May 31, 2009) (population of agglomeration: 1,011,459 [1]) and an area of approximately 100 km². It is located in the west of the country, in the province of South Holland, of which it is also the provincial capital. The Hague is, like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Almere, part of the Randstad metropolitan area, with 6,659,300 inhabitants.

The Hague is the seat of government, but not the capital of the Netherlands, a role set aside by the Dutch constitution for Amsterdam.

The Hague is the home of the States-General of the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands lives and works in The Hague. All foreign embassies and government ministries are located in the city, as well as the Hoge Raad der Nederlanden (Supreme Court), the Raad van State (Council of State) and many lobbying organisations.

The Hague is also the de facto judicial capital of the United Nations, being the location of its primary judicial institutions.

Hello Adrian,
As I admire the sepia in this composition, I wonder how it would look if you took it at the blue hour. The architecture of the featured buildings is sharp and well exposed. Best regards.
Danilo

dear Adrian,
a beautiful mono tone picture of the wonderful old houses on the water.
the designs of those are really sophisticated and match the water-scape,
in this shot, the rippled water surface and blur cloudy sky make splendid perspective for the houses.
thank you for your excellent shot,
Akihisa

Hi Adrian!

This photo has amazing clarity. What did you do to make it has this look? Thanks for the informative note. This is what I like so much about TL; I get to see things that I would otherwise never.

TFS
Dennis

Wonderful old buildings with a modern one on the left to add contrast.

I like the water in the foreground with the sun glisteng off it.

Your slight sepia treatment adds to your overall result. Thanks

Zdravo Adrian

Hi Adrian

The yellow sepia tone adds a nice archival mood. Good sharpness, reflections & tonal range. TWell managed backlighting with superb shadow details on the buildings along the waterfront. Tfs!

Hello Adrian! Very interesting Black and White work, nice lightness, very good contrast. Interesting composition. Good luck!

Bonjour Adrian.
Un passage au vieillissement parfaitement réalisé qui donne beaucoup de charme à cette belle photo, Bravo.
Bonne journée.
Urs

Hi Adrian,

The subdued sepia treatment works nicely in this composition. You framed the shot well, with a sufficient amount of water in the foreground to lead up to the buildings along the waterfront. A very clear image of the interesting architecture, well done!

Best regards,
Werner

Hi Adrian,
I had to, of course, see your photo from my country. I've been to The hague many times, but never had time to visit this very important place. I really like how you gave this a sort of an old look while also showing one of the modern buildings in your composition. You picked a good cloudy day for this type of photo.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Adrian,
Interesting PP work, certainly gives an old-age feel. Great details and design work within the building, no signs of distortion too. I found your note to be quite interesting. Great job.

TFS,
Scott.

HI Adrian
The pp making it look like a page out of a history book.
This is just my opinion, a bit less of the water and a bit more of the cloudy sky as the peak of the building is very close to the frame, but others may not agree.
Nevertheless I still think its a very good shot

Magnifica! Adrian.
Una stampa antica di valore :-)
Perfetta profondità di campo e bellissimi sia la luce che i rifletti argentei sull'acqua.
Eccezionale la nitidezza ed anche i particolare.
Bravo.
Ciao! Vanda

Hi Adrian,

The sepia realy fits perfectly with the beeautiful old buildings. Interesting composition and I like the reflection of the light in the water. It makes it all more lively. Good sharpness and the clouds look amazing. Well done!

TFS Greetings Simone

Un bianco e nero molto bello e pulito. Una foto che ricorda quelle anni 50. Architettura superba, buon contrasto, composizione molto armoniosa. Bella anche l'atmosfera.

Ciao,
