Sprout...

Yes that’s my family name translated to the English language: Spruijt means Sprout and in Dutch that means Brussels sprout. To be precise Dutch spelled sprout is spruit, without the letter ‘j’ but the pronunciation is the same. And I can assure you that I was teased with that name on primary school. Even teachers bullied me by calling me “Hé, Spruitje”, what means “Hé little Brussels sprout”. Yes, but those same teachers called me later “Sir Sprout” :) after growing up by eating lots of sprouts and becoming six feet eight and eighty five kilos. Ha! OK when cooked the whole house smells like hell, but those delicious vitamin bombs taste great together with nice cooked potatoes and lots of gravy! So together with this picture, my adoration of aircraft and history you can figger out why my nickname is Green Baron!

The shoot of this Brussels sprout: first the sprout was nicely washed and put on a white dish with a small layer of water. Than I attached my Minolta Z1 camera on a tripod, add some extra halogen light and used fill flash. Made approximately twenty shots from different positions of the sprout and chose this one to post at TL.

Bon appetite!

Brussels Sprout
The Brussels sprout (Brassica Oleracea Gemmifera Group) is a cultivar group of Wild Cabbage cultivated for its small (typically 2.5-4 cm diameter) leafy green heads, which resemble miniature cabbages. The name stems from the original place of cultivation, not because of the vegetable's popularity there.
During the sixteenth century they enjoyed popularity in Belgium eventually spreading throughout Europe. Cultivation exists in the United States as well with certain coastal areas of San Mateo, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties of California being one production unit.
The cooking of the Brussels sprout is also the subject of much debate. If correctly cooked, the unpleasant smell is avoided and the vegetable possesses a delicate nutty flavour. Stir frying is also an option. Many consider that the best flavour is only developed in mid to late winter, after the plants have been exposed to some frost. Commonly the base is 'crossed' with a knife under the belief that this will lead to more even cooking. Others believe that this crossing procedure leads to a leaching of flavours and that it should be avoided. (Text Wikipedia.com)

I normally dislike sprouts! - but this looks lush, green and gorgeous. Of course I like sprouts when translated into Dutch :) My surname Little just means...Little.

This is a very nice macro shot - lovely shiny texture and great colours.

Hi Mr. Rosenkohl,
yes - that's the German name for this delicious green yummy.
I like your shot, so fresh and sharp, very well done. How do you prepare it for dinner?
I have seen it in Holland with Pinda-Sauce.
Do you like it with peanuts?
Thanks for the shot, bye and greetings

I love veggies but these little green things are not a favourite. My name for them are "benoude bolletjies". But you made it look quite good here. Nice frame. Should work well for a recipe book.

In New Zealand we call them Brussel Sprouts and we grew them once. Never again though, as no one liked them!! I must have been cooking them wrong...
Pretty picture Hans!! Are you going to enlarge it and frame it for your wall? I like your frame very much,
TFS

What a great shot Hans, and your information about your name and where you come from is just great, well done again!

The photo is just great, knowing what these things can look like and I am sad to say taste like, you have adone a fantastic job of making it look like you want to just reach in and eat it!

Could I be so bold as to comment that the photo might have done a bit better if the lighting wasn't so harsh, what I mean by that is that the shot seems to have a bit of reflection of the light, not sure if it was the fill flash or the other one, but on the left of the picture it is just worderful, but it somehow gets a bit less detailed and beautiful on the middle to right side.

Just my view on a great photo.

Cheers

Steve

Great shot and very good PP work. Both the quality of the photo and the effects created are excellent.
Well done!

Hello Hans
this is a very appetizing composition, which could turn anyone into a brussel sprout lover ;-). Great closeup, very nice detail with the water giving this even more freshness.Sharpness, POV and lighing is wonderful. Very well presented and framed.

Hoi Hans,
Groeten,
Niek

Enough of my rubbish, I like your subject, it look very artistic, I also like the fact that it is not a super good looking sprout, it show the natural side of it, great details and lighting. :D Good job my friend,

Hi Hans
Your cabbage is wonderful. Very much I am curious, of your more distant photographs for Hunt. For you little time already stayed. (translator)
Anna

very nice image! it's almost abstract the way you positioned it in this photo. it adds to the image that there's waterdrops on the little sprout. and of course very well framed. great job mr sprout!
