Prins Willim Spiegelretour ship

This is picture of a replica of the Prins Willim, a Dutch ‘Spiegelretour ship’ ; translated: mirror return; from the stern named mirror in Dutch) of the vessel and the way they used the ship: go to the East Indies (Indonesia) and back, which was quite optimistic, many ships never arrived nor came back.

The original was build in 1650 and sunk on the 10th of February 1662 at Brandon (Madagascar). It was the biggest ship from this type ever build. The photo posted here is taken during the Amsterdam Sail 2005. Below you find some interesting details regarding the ship, the replica and the well know Dutch Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, the world’s first multinational corporation.

Anyhow this ‘aged’ picture is quite a contradiction or should I write an anachronism? First to help our friends from the USA ;) in 1651 there were no (digital) cameras, although it was the time of great Dutch painters like Rembrandt, Ruysdael and Saerndam so there are many nice paintings of those ships. The second anachronism is the Big wheel, or Ferris wheel, which can be observed at the right side of the ship. What-the-heck this is my way of presenting this magnificent vessel. Hope you like it too! BTW in the WS you find the full colour version.

The Prins Willem was the largest ship at the time of the Dutch East India Company (the VOC). It was built in 1649 in Middelburg in the Netherlands and sank near Madagaskar in 1662.
Curiously, the name on the ship was Prins Willim. Two reasons have been mentioned for this. One being that that is Middle Dutch, the other that there wasn't enough space for the name, so they changed the 'e' to an 'i', which is shorter.

A replica has been built under the same name The Prins Willem is a replica of the VOC ship Prins Willem, built at shipyard Amels in Makkum (Netherlands) for the Oranda Mura (Holland Village) themepark in Nagasaki, Japan. Since 2004, she is part of the themepark Cape Holland in Den Helder, the Netherlands.

VOC
The Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC in old-spelling Dutch, literally "United East Indian Company") was established in 1602, when the Estates-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It remained an important trading concern for almost two centuries, paying an 18% annual dividend for almost 200 years, until it became bankrupt and was formally dissolved in 1800, its possessions and the debt being taken over by the government of the Batavian Republic. Hi Hans,

It has resulted in a great peace of work !! And there is also a good story and description with it.
What can I say? There is nothing wrong in it, so I can't complain. ;-)
The border, colors, sharpness, compo, everything is oke. Maybe you could crop away the Ferris wheel (reuzenrad) at the right side of the ship? Because that is not of 1651 I guess.
All in all .... a fantastic piece of work!!
greetings,
Joop!

mooi in beeld die replika!

Hello Hans
but where thus passed the pirate Jack Sparrow and his treasure ?
The sepia tonality passed to us from the time present of a jump in the past.
Merci pour le partage, mon ami,
Corinne

Hallo Hans.
Prachige opname en gezet in een passend kader.
mooi van kleur en de jiste hoek van het schip genomen.
Het reuzenrad op de achtergrond vind ik wel wat storend.
Groet Fans

Some great PP work of a very nice image Hans.
Love the colors you have used this time and I like the framing!

It was absolutely great, strawling along all these old vessels during Sail 2005. Yes, we were there too...

Very nice work again!!

He Hans,

Mooie prent!

Groet,

Henk.

Superb ship, I like this old-times look and atmosphere. Very creative framing. Nice sepia tones (kind of sepia, anyway). It makes us dreaming about those fabulous times...

Well presented poster of this wonderful sailing ship, Hans. It looks so old, but having the Ferris wheel in the BG gives the scene a more up-to-date look about it.

Hi Hans, lovely presentation for a wonderful ship with splendid sepia color, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Hans,

If there would be a book published about this ship, your image would be a winner for the cover page! Excellent shot, great PP work and presentation.
TFS,
Vassilis

Hans!
Your notes with the art photo is a classic work! Simply outstanding work!

pts will follow:)

Great shot, but I'd lose the frame.

Excellent use of sepia. It gives me a genuine feel of being a historical photo. The framing works very well. Composition is great - the horizontal and vertical rhythms provided by the mast structures works well with the diagonal provided by the ship. Good work.

Lovely picture and great presentation! To build something like that, so exquisite, and have it sink in less than 12 years ......
