NINIX’s swans [part 2] Blondy

The story continues...
We left the NINIX’s swan site yesterday with a missing young swan (a young duck is named duckling, why not a young swan a swanling?)

What happened before? When NINIX and I were looking for the swan family we found them in a canal not far from the pond were they have their nest. This was my first meeting with father, mother and seven young swans. One of the little swans had a significant lighter appearance, I named it Blondy. Henk told me this was the result of a Turkish swan specie, Blondy has Turkish genes.

After a while father swan decided to leave the canal and go to the pond, but to get there they had to cross the street. What happened is that the male swan first checked if the area was clear of any danger. First is wasn’t, some ugly unknown person with a camera was too close by, the person was the Green Baron, so he backed off after Henk’s advise. Looking from a distances the male took his wife and offspring to the dike of the pond, and gently the swan bunch slid into the water of the pond.

But not all, Henk counted six swanlings in stead of the original seven and became a bit nervous. “Were is Blondy?” Apparently the little blond one was left behind in the canal . Henk rushed home for his homemade “little-swan-rescue-device”; a twelve feet long rod with a net.

While Henk was busy finding Blondy, the swan family sailed across the pond if everything was fine and no one missing. Conclusion: swans can’t count or is it the rude law of nature? Anyway after a while I heard Henk shouting. He found the young swan and now he tried to catch the little fellah. That wasn’t easy! At the end of the cannel he finally managed to get the lost swan in to the net and was carefully lifted out the water (see WS image I)

The Baron was involved in this rescue as well, but his part was only minor, he got the little piece of fur out of the net and put it in the hands of his rescuer (see WS II). Meanwhile the swan family had got on to land. The male and particular the female were grooming there self while the six swanlings were resting in the sun. Carefully Henk put the Blondy near the male. Apparently it was dead tired, it wobbled to the group, but no one gave the little blond one attention. Finally mother was ready with her grooming and it would not have surprised me if she carried a handbag with all the usual “ladies crap” like; nail polish, lipstick, deodorant, foundation and mascara so long it took a while before she was ready (...of course all the woman around the world are in that respect the same ;)

Anyway, she went to Blondy and started picking her. What was wrong? Why would she hurt her own kid? Is this the cruelty of nature? This picking went on even when the whole bunch was in the water again! Seeing nature so cruel, it must have a goal, was Blondy ill, or did she have the scent of the Baron? Was she left behind on purpose? We will never know, but Henk catch Blondy at the end of the day again when he knew she would never survive the night while together with her mom. He took her home to bring the little blond chick next day to the bird sanctuary.

But on the next morning Henk found the little swan dead...all hope fade away. Little Blondy was in Swan’s Heaven already.

Here my tribute to Blondy, a picture of three of her sisters and/or brothers...

Here ends the sad story of the little fur ball Blondy the Beautiful Swanling. Tomorrow a new story of the Ninix’s swans here on TL...to be continued!

PP-talk: Cropped, framed and add text, that’s all.

BREAKING NEWS

The swans which have a nest next to my appartment have youngs too! The eggs have hatched today and six little fur balls are sheltering under mothers wings. Tomorrow (Tuesday May 15th) I hope to make some pictures of this happy family, it has become too dark when I discovered the birth.

We have to go on....

Mooie foto, Hans! Het ziet er snoezig uit, terwijl er 1 gemist wordt... Pijn is niet altijd zichtbaar, dat zie je maar weer.
Soms moet je de woorden lezen....

Nice and cute picture but I especially like your notes. I always have to think for a while to put a note to my pictures and most often don't get any further then just putting a description of what it is. You however don't seem to have any problem with that.

Yes, nature can be cruel, and it's survival of the fittest. Mama would know of the struggle the little one would have had to go through - still a sad tale.
Cute little bundles of fluff; and thanks Hans for your story
