Morning fog

Yesterday morning I went up (very) early. In fact I didn’t had the plan to go out bed so untimely (5 o’clock) but nature called. Looking outside the sun was just above the horizon and a thin layer of fog covered the world around me. Did first what natured asked me to do, grabbed my new buddy and went outside to take some shots, the thin mist would disappear rapidly with the quick rising sun. It was a cloudless sky, not really blue, nor grey, more blue-turquoise.

I also visited my swans that morning. At first thought was, seeing two adults, father was finaly kicked out of the pub, but when I came close by it apeared to be a second female, I think the sister of the mother joined the family. Anyway all the six cygnets are alive and kicking and asked me to say hello to all Trekkers :-)

PP-talk: Shot in RAW, adjusted saturation and brightness, increased blue tones of the sky, cropped, converted to JPEG, framed and add text.

Fog

Fog is a cloud in contact with the ground. Fog differs from other clouds only in that fog touches the surface of the Earth. The same cloud that is not fog on lower ground may be fog where it contacts higher ground such as hilltops or mountain ridges.

Fog is distinct from mist only in its density. Fog is defined as cloud which reduces visibility to less than 1 km, where as mist is that which reduces visibility to less than 2 km. Meteorologically, there are various kinds of fogs, but inside one there's no difference.

The foggiest place in the world is the Grand Banks off the island of Newfoundland, Canada. Fog is frequent here as the Grand Banks is the meeting place of the cold Labrador Current from the north and the much warmer Gulf Stream from the south. The foggiest land areas in the world are Point Reyes, California and Argentia, Newfoundland, both with over 200 foggy days a year.

Characteristics Fog forms when water vapor in the air at the surface begins to condense into liquid water. Fog normally occurs at a relative humidity of 100%. This can be achieved by either adding moisture to the air or dropping the ambient air temperature. Fog can form at lower humidities, and fog can sometimes not form with relative humidity at 100%. A reading of 100% relative humidity does not mean that the air can not hold any more moisture, but the air will then becomes known as supersaturated. Fog formation does require all of the elements that normal cloud formation requires with the most important being condensation nuclei. When the air is saturated, additional moisture tends to condense rather than staying in the air as vapor. Condensation nuclei must be present in the form of dust, aeresols, pollutants, etc. for the water to condense upon. When there is exceptional amounts of condensation nuclei present, especially hydroscopic (water seeking such as salt, see below) then the water vapor may tend to condense below 100% relative humidity. Conversely, when low amounts condensation nuclei are not present and wind is light, the water may tend to stay in the air as vapor which would increase the humidity to over 100%.
Fog can form suddenly, and can dissipate just as rapidly, depending what side of the dewpoint the temperature is on. This phenomenon is known as Flash Fog and is the inspiration for an antiburglary device that stops burglars by filling the room with artificial fog.

Another type of formation also common is sea fog (also knows as salt fog or salty Fog). This is due to the peculiar effect of salt. Clouds of all types require minute hygroscopic particles upon which water vapor can condense. Over the ocean surface, the most common particles are salt from salt spray produced by breaking waves. Except in areas of storminess, the most common areas of breaking waves are located near coastlines, hence the greatest densities of airborne salt particles are there. Condensation on salt particles has been observed to occur at humidities as low as 70%, thus fog can occur even in relatively dry air in suitable locations such as the California coast. Typically, such lower humidity fog is preceded by a transparent mistiness along the coastline as condensation competes with evaporation, a phenomenon that is typically noticeable by beachgoers in the afternoon.

Fog occasionally produces precipitation in the form of drizzle. Drizzle occurs when the humidity of fog attains 100% and the minute cloud droplets begin to coalesce into larger droplets. This can occur when the fog layer is lifted and cooled sufficiently, or when it is forcibly compressed from above. Drizzle becomes freezing drizzle when the temperature at the surface drops below the freezing point. (Text: Wikipedia.com)

Hi Hans!

There's nothing I'd like to capture better than a morning foggy landscape. The only thing I have to train on is getting up early enough to do that >:)
Nice landscape - looks like it promised for a nice, warm day. Well framed!

Groeten,

Natalia

Hi Hans,
Nice composition, i love the layer of fog just hanging there. As yet yours truly hasn't got up early enoughto take fog photos, really will have to do it one morning! Love the soft colours in this image and the lovely blue sky! Great notes too! TFS
Cheers Tina :-)

This seems to me a dream catch. Glad you had to go and therefor decided to go outside - hope you had enough sleep already.
Hans, helemaal heerlijk die opstijgende (wel in Schiphol stijl blijven natuurlijk) mist.

I always thought that the best shots are taken in the morning, I have a proof of it today, thanks hans to have get up early yesterday. Your presentation is nice too.

That must have been a sight to see. The Baron taking pictures outside in his pyjamas :-).
Good thing you didn't scare away the Baroness.
Beautiful capture of this low fog. And with the blue sky on top.
Well done,

Hoi Hans,

Wat een mooie sfeer heb je vastgelegd met die vroege ochtendmist. Dat is het zeker waard om heel vroeg voor op te staan. Mooie kleuren en licht en je frame past er goed bij.

Nature calling??? HAHAHAHA!...TMI!! (too much information!) But a wonderful shot here Hans, the fog is very nice. We have fog like this in the winter months, laying low in the retention ponds around our house! So....tell me.....did you take care of your nature call BEFORE you went outside?? or after??
HAHAHA!

Hi Hans,
Wonderful photo. You captured very well this little scarf of fog on the field. Nature needs a woolly to awake softly morning. Great mood! Bravo! Annie

Morgenstond, jaja.
Prachtige sfeer, maar het doet wel zeer om vroeg op te staan , zeker als je het niet meer gewend ben. lol
Maar het is een feit, met mist, de mooiste plaatjes.
Good morning job, Hans.

Went out thát early, Hans ??!! Well, a man has to DO, what a man HAS to do..... Sometimes you can't stop it.....

But oke.

It delivered a nice photo with a (very) big border around it. In first I thought it to be too big .... but a second thought said "no, not to big" so now I don't know it anymore.
But I like the capture and after processing. ;-)
greetings,
Joop!

Natural scene has been mastered skillfully in this beautiful composition. Misty dividing ruler is smartly adjusted in a smart point of view. Excellent shot my friend, well done.

Thanks for sharing this image.

Hi Hans,

I am like Shelbeesmom , I remain on the obligation to pick you up at five hours of the morning. Perhaps to change the layers of the six babies swans. Thus a nurse was able to help the mom if I understood well.
Good, I become again serious, it's really a photograph which announces a very beautiful day. I like the houses which seem still sleeped awaiting a sunbeam to awake. A photograph really of that which rises very early. One breathes the tranquility of the morning which belongs only to that which saw it
Heartily,
Corinne

The frame is competing a bit with the fog but the image is very beautiful anyway even if a bit too centered for my taste.

Well considering your new camera its relatively sure that it have an effect. I mean the first weekend i get my Canon the hour of sleep were short :) Wake up before the alarm to continue my experiences :)
The way the roof emerges, i like that... Elements floatings here...

Hoi Hans,
Deze is echt super. Het laagje mist (witte wieven) en het zachte ochtend licht geeft de foto en erg mooie rustige sfeer. Gewoon super hoe de mist de foto in tweeen heeft gedeeld. De compositie en belichting is perfect.
Donders mooi gedaan.
Groeten,
