A statue to commemorate the murder of Theo van Gogh.
Mohammed Bouyeri assassinated van Gogh in the early morning of Tuesday November 2, 2004, in Amsterdam, in front of the Amsterdam East borough office (stadsdeelkantoor) on the corner of the Linnaeusstraat and Tweede Oosterparkstraat, while he was bicycling to work. He shot him eight times. Two knives were also left implanted in his torso, one attaching a five-page note to his body. This statue in Oosterpark Amsterdam was made by Jeroen Henneman and was unveiled in March this year. |

Hi Chris,
Thanks for sharing this statue. Yes we have freedom, and yes it becomes more dangerous to really use freedom of speech.
Els
Theo van Gogh was not my friend. He pushed to hard. But no one can take somebody’s else life. We have to respect a believer. And the believer has to know that he beliefs. And this is not the true he beliefs that it is true but no one is sure. Believers believe but never sell it as the true. Never kill because you believe that you are right. There are so many believes and if they all think they are right war starts now. Thank for presenting this

Good picture Chris
It is a perfect display of the big mouth Van Gogh had.
The fact that he was slaughtered (his head was nearly cut off) for giving his opinion is un Dutch.
We have the freedom of speech and although he said to much and went to far it may never be a reason to kill someone.
The film Submission (11 minutes) written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in 2004 about the bad treatment of Islamitic women based on real fact was the reason for the killing. Submission is the translation of the Arabic word Islam.
Thanks Chris for bringing this back to attention.
All the best,
Hendrik
P.S. For those who are interested: I also made a sculpture inspired by this event. You can see it here
Hi Chris,
This image is well-known to me. You captured it very well with the trees behind it ! The sky is very light, but that is no problem in this photo, thanks to the trees.
greetings,
Joop!
