Back to my childhood

Driving along with the TL friends in the last *Lowland TL meet * we drove over the dyke's along the river 'Lek' (the extension of the Rhine river)
All along there are farms..sheltered by these dykes.

This was nostalgic for me, since I was born in an almost the same sort of farm as we can see here, about 20 miles up-stream from here, in a town called *Wageningen*

My GrandFather, named *Jan Schuurman* , was proud of his farm and all that came with it!

GrandMother and GrandFather had 8 children all together, (including my Mother ) and they where not alowed to sit on a bike on Sunday, or read a book ..just concentrate on the Lord (although I lived there from 0 -5, so no Donald Duck strip books for me )

No, Opa (GrandFather ) was a VERY strict man in his belief/faith.. A form of Protestantism

Later, my Mother told me that I used to immitate GrandFather in his 'a little bend-over' walks.. hands on his back.. and the same did I.. ...2-3 meters walking behind him.. doing so..started from 2 years of age.. Opa was my hero..

He walked on clogs, plain clogs!! ( not the yellow - red paited ones!! that was 'vain' and flirting with the Devil) and as a two year old I also had my little clogs.

Between the bible sessions (3x on Sunday!! )
Opa loved to go out.. and inspect the fields ..with the crops.. and his cattle. 30 milking cows..2 horses and a pony plus buggy (for us grandchildren ..but not on Sunday!!!) (+_*)

Opa used to read the bible 3x on a Sunday..each time an hour .. and no one made a sound..all listening..making a sound was insulting the Lord...

What amases me now..looking back.. that kids did this..I had(have) cousins/cousines.. same.. and somehow we all controlled our selves..

In those days no Cell phones.. Stereo ..TV.. or internet connection.. to go and chat from Alska to New Zealand via Skype..

For the Dutch: ..I am sure that many recognise all I am writing here..specialy the Betuwe..Lexmond Vianen Schoonhoven .. De Krimpenerwaard; this is also the land where our prime Minister Balkenende comes from...

And agian to our Dutch: Wim Sonneveld ..
Song: Het tuinpad van mijn Vader.. is a nice fit here
(diverted from Jean Ferrat's GREAT song" La Montagne)

Thanks folks .. and thanks TL meet friends.. because of you I found something back deep down in my memmory
from the 'old days'

Thanks
John T

Hello JT...
Very nice bright shot.. The nice black frame really brings out the wonderful colors... As always great notes.. I often wonder if our next generation has so many "things" that they have become distant!

I bet this walk down memory lane was much needed!

Tricia

This is a beautiful place John and you have captured it beautifully here. You have composed the picture excellently and I like the well ballanced exposure and the range of recorded brightness and colour. Your note is excellent too, providing an interesting insight into your own background and into important aspects of Dutch society past and present.
Well done and thanks!
Best wishes
Bill

"sweet memories"...

Hi John,
Yep, this is the picture I was waiting for! Great capture of the Dutch farm heritage, excellent colours as I'm used from JT-photography. The frame is a bit overdone though in my opinion, I like to see more farm :-)
Regarding the very interesting note going along with this picture: the story of my life. Religion; no not for me. Well John an outstanding and typical Tulip posting a joy for the eye!

Thanks for the comment. Your Opa and mine have the same caracters, I guess,

Very good John, love the color & neat Dutch look of the farm house! Enjoyed your notes! Minster, Ohio is a german settlement town, where I took the horse photos & where our two children were born. The Germans like the Dutch kept their homes & grounds very neat & clean. Have a good week-end my friend! :} Don

Hello John,
If you were to ask me to conjure up a vision of "a house" for me, it would be as this one, maybe smaller, but born of childhood imaginings of fairy tales and stories. And, most importantly, it would have to have the window boxes, filled with geraniums.
Back to reality--we don't see this kind of house here (and I see many houses), but this is a treat, with its manicured landscaping, stonework, and fresh paint. Good to see that it is so well loved.
Thanks for sharing,
Karen
P.S. Favorite part of the note--your impersonation of your Opa; you must be a comedian!

Nostalgic! Lovely picture to reminisce by! I too remember my Opa very well (both of them in fact). Seems Opa's are a boys heroes. Mine were different though: much more permissive than my parents, and understanding a boys needs (like the aquisition of make-believe weapons, like sticks for swords, which my mother tried in vain to discourage).
Cheers
Otto

Hello John :)
What more beautiful than chilhood memories ! Many thanks for sharing sur nice shot and note ! You are a great man John :)

This travel in time was so interesting to read Mr. Tulip! It is much appropriated with this beautiful and sunny composition :) I like the movement created by the curve in foreground and the eye perspective of the house. I really wish that I could visit your country someday; the mood there seems to be agreeable :) Thanks,
Claudine
BTW, I didn’t know that the Dalai Lama have said that ;)

Picture postcard perfect, John. You convey a sense of typically pristine Holland property -- pleasing lines and colors, a point of view with good framing and contrasts. It appears to be a fine slice of country life -- and of a people who take pride in the way their homes and lands look. Well done.

Jim

Hi John
