[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Gannets... we found them in Artis, the Amsterdam Zoo.

In Holland we call them "Jan van Gent"... (Litteraly: John of Gent).
As we were passing these "Johns" here we overheard someone saying these are "Sas van Gent" birds.... but isn't Sas van Gent a Belgian city???
And then there was the Green Baron... telling us that he thought these "johns" were a bit "larger" than he expected....... oh boy!

Anyway... we shot these birds in the Amsterdam Zoo... and yes... they survived!!!

Sas van Gent/Zeeuws Vlaanderen - Ad heeft daar jaren gewerkt, ligt aan het kanaal van Gent (België) naar Terneuzen.

Prachtige tekening op kop en poten Anneke, zo heb ik ze nog nooit gezien.

Prachtig shot van deze Sassen/Jannen. Mooie krappe compositie en lekker scherp. Ben wel benieuwd naar wat FF en TG nu voor staan.

Hi Anneke,

A handsome couple isn't it... they are gorgeous, I like your captured, very good details and sharpness, I find them hard to captured when we were up in Muriwai beach... their fur is so white... it also depend on the day when the photo is taken sometime it is easily OE, but here I see you have manage it very well.... good job my dear!

Sas Van Gent ligt wel degelijk in Nederland, niet ver van de grens, paar kms. van Belgische gemeente Zelzate. (Gent is een Belgische stad, ben ik geboren) Het zien er wel olijkerds uit.

Hoi Ennie,
Ja prachtig hoor! Mooi gepakt deze "Jannen", het zijn wel spelers van twee verschillende teams aan de bandjes te zien. En wat Sas van Gent betreft, dat ligt psies op de grens van Nederland en Belgie :-)
Zie overigens geen gras, maar dat heb ik niet gemaaid hoor!

Nice control of the exposure to keep the details in the whites, sharp details and great colours around the eyes. And all with an interesting, if slightly confusing note! (why call a bird "John of" anything?)

Hello Anneke !

Indeed , when you look at the proportions of these birds , they seem to be the size of seagulls. In reality they are more the size of swans ( except for the long neck of course ).

About the composition. Well, this lovely couple seems to enjoy the moment observing the visitors at the zoo. I find the ones in the background a bit distracting as they are too similar to our two main subjects. We actually loose the shapes with these elements. You could have removed those easily by reproducing the bakground over those.

Just a thought (^_^).

Martine and me should visit the natural reserve of Bonaventure Island once again this year !!!! ( see our Gaspesian travelogues )
