After a long day of work, I decided to go on a little tour across the 'Twentse' countryside in the hope to find a field of dandelions with a nice backdrop. I knew of two locations with a good potential, but arriving at both locations the expected flowers were no longer there. I had to decide quickly what to do next. So I tried my luck at the 'Doorbraak', a nature reserve in development. The time of season was still too early and the overall impression didn't excite me at all.

Since the sun was already setting and I didn't have any other spot in mind, I ventured away from my car toward the river 'Eksosche Aa'. Just past a little woodland 'along the river, I found a nice view down an open field with side lighting from the west. I setup my camera and made a few exposures while the sun slowly dipped under the horizon. During the setting of the sun I noticed that the weather was changing. A thick layer of clouds slowly drifted in from the northeast bringing colder temperatures and the potential in blocking the sunlight sooner then expected. Luckily the cloud movement wasn't that fast and the sunset finished nicely.

A 0.9 ND grad hard was used to balance the exposure.

Niek, great view with fantastic low light. The little road (right), little canal (center) and the clouds (top left) all pull your eye right into the photo. It was a great place to stop .. a very nice perspective. Fantastic colors.

Hi Niek
Magnificent photo!
I like much this kind of drama in sky! I can observe it also in my northern area.
Your image is so well composed. The fence along the small canal leads us to the right first third. The low horizon enhances the dynamism of the cloudy column.
But, what I like more here, is the luminosity in this landscape. There is a part of mystery when the day is falling. This mood is what raises our mind to brave the coming night.
beautifully done! Annie

Hello Niek,

Some may find it dark, but I love these dark tones , with this late afternoon light. Bold rich but natural colors are well catched. Excellent perspective with the clouds line.
Well observed and captured.
Robert

Hello Niek,
mmmm this photo makes me feel relaxed just looking at it, I can almost smell the rich grasses..and a touch of rain in the air..the cool air of the early evening...so beautiful...the depth is so very wonderful ...TFS

Bonsoir Niek,

As I can see, HDR is not the only way to balance contrasty scenes. I have a Cokin grad filter in my bag and 95% of the time I forget I have it. "Why to do things simply when I can do it the hard way" ;o)

Nice compositin here with nice saturated colors. Some shadows are dense but, they wouldn't give me more informations, so it is just fine like this. You choose the perfect time of the day to warm the colors and to give a lot of texture in the grass. Clouds formation are also splendids. Great work and TFS.

Alain

Hi Niek,

Beautiful landscape - the sunlight on the grass with the string of clouds above is terrific. Composition is excellent - nothing to add to this shot, it's outstanding.

Cheers,

Nathalie

Hellow Niek,
