[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello everybody,

Yesterday I went to a photo-friend. He's got the same enthousiasme and the same drive for making photo's, and he is also very creative with his equipment and his set-up. He makes it all by himself, using old flashlamps, old tripods or zelf made tripods. I was perplexed, and the best of all, it really works out!!!!

We had a lot of fun that day, and we lost all track of time. We have a differt look of how to make a good photo. I am looking for mood, contact and feelings in a photo, and he is watching for the technical things, like the lights and the sharpness..

I learned a lot of him. He used a bright lamp that doen't affect the lights in the photo, but it helps him to get the great sharpnees. And indeed, when he put on that light and shot off all the flashights, we get a black dark photo!!! Thats what I am gonna use the next time!!!

For this photo I used a flashlight on the right and 3 reflectors at the front (the reflectors were made of polystyrene). At the back there was a black cloth.
For the camera I used 1/200 and F10.

My photo-friend has one wish, he wanted a portrait with eye contact. He foud it hard to get it like that or look like that into a camera....

I hope it worked out.

Thanks for reading this long note....:)

Janneke
ps. In a workshop I show you a photo that he made from me!

Really good portrait Janneke - sharp, clear, well lit and nice close composition..

Sometimes the home made stuff's the best.. (I got a great soft box made with an old shoe box and piece of cotton...)

Cheers
David

Hi Janneke...
Beautiful portrait with so nice light...
Have a nice weekend...
Regards...
Andro

very good portrait with nice expression

Een mooi indringend portret.Heel goed uitgelicht.

Groet Ben

This is a good portrait - light works well, particularly considering he wears glasses! Composition is tight but with negative space that allows it some freedom. Colours and details are good.

Hi Jan,
Awesome portrait! I'm hoping to get into portraits sometime in the near future so this is quite an inspiring photo. The clarity and exposure looks first class, great compo too. Job well done :).

TFS,
Scott.

Hello Jan,

I just love this!
Yes, you certainly have eye-contact without any problem, considering that your friend is wearing glasses. The catchlight, along with the sharply repoduced facial features, gives a good character impression.
The tight crop, for me, works so well and with the slight tilt of the head, produces a gentle diagonal aspect.

What a good way to learn portraits, from someone who is already experienced.

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hello Janneke.
Interesting portrait of your friend.
Well managed light. It can be difficult to take a portrait of the person with the glasses without reflection on the glasses.
You did it very well.
Congratulations.

Bravo.
Bonne journée.

Jan,

Very good portrait, the pinpoint lighting on the face is really good.
Excellent eye contact indeed. Well composed.
