The Church of Røros, named Bergstadens Zir.

The church was built between 1780-84. The Mining Company paid the costs and was in charge of construction, and the cost was 23.000 RD (a miner’s salary at that time was 50 RD per year).

The church steeple is 60 metres high. The church has a total of 1600 seats, which makes it one of the larger churches in Norway. The Mining Company owned the church until 1865, and then it was taken over by the congregation.

Male and female in the church were separated; the men were seated on the right and the women on the left side. The upper class sat in the front and the lower class in the back. The very poorest were placed on the galleries; there are stairs outside leading to these seats. Criminals as well as other "outcasts" had to sit in the back of these galleries.

The workshop includes a map covering the centre of Røros, and all images in the Streets of Røros series have been taken within the map area.

------

The only reason for founding a town in this place was the fact copper was discovered in the area, and Røros Copper Mining Company was established in 1644. The company was operative for 333 years, until closure in 1977 (2).

Hi Pablo,
Very pleasent view of this interesting building. I suppose you can see some influence of Russian Church architecture here? Or is it just my imagination?
Sunil

Nice Pablo, I first studied the map, I have now seen enough pictures so that I can visualise how this city and it's surroundings look.
That must have been a big undertaking to spend so much money on a church, but it is a beautiful church and no doubt very good for the moral of the miners, so probably worth the money.
Thanks for this beautiful picture, love to travel with you through Norway!

Hi Pablo !

I've looked at this one a couple of times but I have to say that is not one of your best photos.
I think thatt the compo is too busy and the big colourful house is too eyecatching so the rest of the photo (including the church) remains somewhere behind in the shadow.
Of course it's an interesting capture and the technique and note are great, too.

sincerely yours,
v

Dear Pablo,

It is very interesting to see that houses in Røros are built by the wood and assorted tones of the woodwork is beautifying the street view. A wonderful shot have been taken from an exciting point of view. Well done my friend.

Hello Pablo
How interesting it is to learn about segregation ...in a church!!
The City is much larger than I thought, according to your map.
What strykes my attention in all your postings of Roros is the cleanliness of streets and of refurbished historic buildings.
This posting is a valuable addition to your serie on Roros.
Cheers.
